Franco Manca Review

Book a table at Franco Manca

Best for: Organic menu, fresh pizza, cheap eats, quick dinner in Chiswick.

Great: Chorizo, service, watching the pizzas being made and cooked.

There are certain criteria that I expect when dining out. A proper welcome, a good table, a menu with a myriad of tastes to tickle the taste buds, delicious food served within a timely manner, drinks that flow throughout the duration, effortless service and good company, although you can’t fault a restaurant if your date turns out to be the Hunchback of Notre Dam with as much conversation as a mute.

When dining out as a critic all of the aforementioned criteria are heightened. You have to be on the ball, taking in the atmosphere of the place as well as hunting for quirky additions to the restaurant that will make the write-up more colourful and engaging.

With a mental list of things to take note of, it was off to Franco Manca I went, without the Hunchback but with an Ugly Sister instead.

We were welcomed at the door by a smiley man, asked where we’d like to sit in an already busy restaurant, and then presented with our paper menus and left to make our choices. For my sister, who is a bit of a health freak, it was a bonus that Franco Manca prides itself on it’s organic menu, from the wine that promises to aid digestion to the mozzarella that is sourced from a farm in Somerset.

Starters came and went; a precursor to dinner – they didn’t add much to the meal but certainly whet the appetite for what was to come. Two pizzas the size of spaceships filled the table, literally. We had to move the vino to make space. The pizzas aren’t any old dough, cheese and tomato stodge; the pizzas here make you feel like you’re sitting in a Trattoria in Rome.

Made with light and crispy, slow-rise sourdough, cooked in a huge wood-burning brick oven for all to see, and topped with the finest ingredients, the pizzas are where Franco Manca really excels. The chorizo I inhaled was a real treat. No wonder really, the meat comes from Brindisa, one of my favourite haunts South of the river.

With far too much pizza to consume, I couldn’t help but leave some. But quicker than I could can say ‘can I take that home please?’ the waitress fluttered past taking my plate and returning within moments with a goody bag. That certainly ticks the service box for me – dinner that can be grilled the next day and eaten for lunch – perfecto! Even a day old Franco Manca pizza transported me back to that Trattoria.

Around the spacious restaurant everyone was enjoying their pizza: friends catching up; kids enjoying eating with their hands without getting told off; parents enjoying the fuss-free atmosphere; and men in suits grabbing a bite to eat after a busy day at the office.

Franco Manca isn’t a place for romantics to stare longingly at each other or for those wanting to stay for a long time. It’s a simple restaurant focusing on food. People go there for a quick bite to eat and then disappear into the night, probably armed with lunch for the next day.

Weighing up the pros and cons of the meal, I started to write the review before I’d even left, and then the bill was presented and Big sis and I took out our purses ready to go Dutch. Wait a minute, this was a review, I wasn’t supposed to pay, that’s the beauty of reviews; you get to eat out at delicious restaurants, leaving with a full belly and an unopened purse.

So panic hit me. Surely they knew why I was here. The food has been excellent, the service likewise. Truth is, they didn’t know, so when the waitress presented us with the bill, an embarrassing conversation ensued with me explaining that I was in fact a critic and I wasn’t just after a free meal before scampering off in to the night.

Bill situation resolved, Big Sis and I left to get the tube home. I’m still astounded that they didn’t know I was going to be there, it seemed like they knew all along. From the happy chap opening the door, to the cheery doggy-bag waitress, to the piping hot plates of goodness, to the polished service throughout the night.

Come to think of it, you could try doing the same next time you’re there but I did have to flash the waitress to get the free meal: my Fluid London business card, that is.

“We went there for a late lunch and the restaurant was half empty. We had to ask 3 different waiters for a baby high-chair and we were waiting forever for someone to come and take our order. Not to forget about the manager who saw us seating at the table and trying to catch an attention of the staff and did not react at all. Finally after asking the waitress to take the order, she surprised us with her very easy going attitude or rather a lack of manners. She was supporting herself with her both hands on our table and chewed a gum while talking to us..... However, the PIZZA was very nice, not the original Italian but for the London standard very good. ”

“Sadly no atmosphere and food certainly not rated. Although welcoming & staff friendly. Despite being quiet, the waiter came back to verify our order twice, then still forgot to bring the starters. After a terribly long wait (place was empty) our main course arrived first. Meal tasted surprisingly dreadful. So bad that both myself and my partner (although ravenous) were unable to finish our meal and that's saying something. Having lived and worked in Italy and eaten out regularly both in Italy and the UK (italian being my favourite) this place certainly does not deserve its place even in a top 100”

“This is my meeting place for a million different reasons, meeting hot dates, girly gossips, parents over, business meetings, solitary lunches and somewhere to take the kids when i'm babysitting but FM is the ultimate hangover destination! I love the pizza there - it's the best pizza in London that's for sure!”

"Great experience, anyone who has memories of old London will get this, be prepared to be fleeced, by girls who are in fairness trying to earn a living, that involves showing you their fanny." Which venue is this?
