The Bletchley Review

The Bletchley is featured in these Guides:

Top Ten things you need to know about The Bletchley:

(1) Named after Bletchley Park, once top-secret home of the World War Two Codebreakers, this is the place to go if you ever imagined yourself in the Secret Service. Get ready to embrace your inner Turing, and delve into the art of deciphering encoded messages alongside a good healthy dose of alcohol inside this unusual cocktail bar!

(2) Enter what appears to be an old pub on the King’s Road, perhaps aptly named World’s End. But, its not like your regular local. Music from the 1940’s rises from the basement, and at the bottom of the stairs, sharply dressed officers greet you with a ‘Welcome, Agent’. With that, you are thrown into an immersive experience – as a spy for Her Majesty’s Government in World War II.

(3) The underground war room is cosy, and dimly lit with the walls adorned with codes, messages, mission plans and mathematical equations.

(4) Military jackets are given to every agent (to really feel the part) and after choosing an agent name, you are ready to report for duty... but remember that welcome drink first - the code-breakers tipple served in a mess tin.

(5) When selecting which level of difficulty you fancy taking for the evening, you have three to choose from: Agent, Captain and General. (Word of warning: don’t think that just because you can do a crossword, you should go for the highest level of difficulty!)

(6) Every table gets its own Enigma machine to foil the enemy’s plans. In true 'Confidential’ form, each mission is delivered in a brown envelope. Command HQ is just a radio away. And after some brain work, trade in your decrypted codes for another cocktail!

(7) All the cocktails are bespoke. Yes, this does mean we weren’t entirely sure what we drank, but we drank them and they were all rather delicious. Tip: at one point we were asked to sniff and taste unknown substances in tiny bottles... choose things you like as it may appear in one of those personalised beverages! Non-alcoholic also available.

(8) Don’t be too alarmed if you hear an air-raid siren! You don’t have to get under the table... it’s just a busy room of code-breakers and another table of agents phoning in a completed mission to Command HQ.

(9) Victory Shots, and a custard cream (!) are awarded on completion of the final mission to celebrate.

(10) If you fancy some good grub after your cocktails in the nearly two hour experience, the restaurant upstairs, Journey, still part of the Chelsea Funhouse, has an eclectic mix of delights... including tuna ceviche, truffle chips, and beetroot and horseradish mousse! Decor is a mix of Mad Hatter meets 1920’s prohibition. And a unicorn with a neon horn thrown in for good measure. In large letters above it, it says... ‘Stroke for Champagne’. Continue your party here after all that hard work!...read more
