Stecca Review

Top 10 things you need to know about Stecca Chelsea:

1) We may not be in sunny Beverly Hills, but Hollywood Road, near the footballing celebrities of Chelsea FC and the shopping delights along the Kings Road, has a similar VIP vibe. Walk down these polished London streets, lined with luxurious apartments and antiques shops, and you’ll encounter Stecca, one of the best Italian restaurants in the area.

2) The decor immediately sets the tone of the restaurant. Sophisticated and minimal, Stecca plays on elegant blues and whites (the Chelsea colours). It’s when you start to worry about preserving the white cotton tablecloths from the inevitable sprinkles of tomato sauce that you realise “Italian” is not always synonym for “rustic”.

3) Chef patron, Stefano Stecca, brings 20 years of experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels across London to his first solo venture. We’re told by the staff that he’s been followed by a group of loyal diners in all his moves. This is palpable in the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere of familiarity: the room is clearly filled with affluent regulars from the local area.

4) However, you don’t need to be a Chelsea resident to enjoy Stecca’s eclectic menu, showcasing a mix of Italian regional specialities. This is a good place to get to know Italian cooking in all its varied aspects.

5) Come during truffle season to taste the holy grail of mushrooms as it’s featured in an array of mouthwatering dishes, from beef tartare, to risotto, to our absolute favourite: fresh pappardelle pasta with duck ragu and black truffle.

6) Whatever period of the year you visit, expect to find top-quality ingredients at Stecca. Everything, from the extra-virgin olive oil to the typical Sardinian bread “carasau” and the melt-in-your-mouth burrata, is sourced from selected Italian producers and gets to your table fresh, to be enjoyed at its best.

7) Tuck into a generous portion of lobster tagliolini, and you’ll easily picture yourself on the Amalfi coast. In the meantime, the waiter will tell you about the restaurant’s routine of making fresh pasta from scratch everyday, during the break between lunch and dinner service. You’ll feel more pampered than after a day at the spa.

8) Try the fish “crudi” (raw), a speciality of Stecca, which is hardly found elsewhere in London. These delicate fish carpaccios and tartares best showcase the quality of products selected by the restaurant. A must try: the Sicilian Mazzara red prawns.

9) Stecca’s staff know their stuff. They’ll guide you through the excellent list of Italian wines, and know the origin of every single item on the menu.

10) Stecca might not be brave in its choice of menu, or hip in its style, but it’s got class. It’s classic in the way it champions the staples of Italian cuisine and ingredients.
