Marvel London Review

Best for: a Fulham Road pre-drinks buzz.

Great: Music; funky artwork; cocktails.

With Christmas debauchery over and New Year’s Eve a distant haze (although how much anyone actually remembers is a mystery), I decided it was time for a change. ‘New Year, New You’...you know the drill. 2011 is a chance to sort my yin from my yang and get utterly cleansed. Week one kicked off with a flying start as I balanced on pilates balls, and nothing but carrot batons passed my lips.

Thoroughly pleased with my efforts, I even extended my joy of the new decade to a shiny, new boy. No, I didn’t find him online or trade in my bicycle for another form of ride; I surprisingly managed to find this one on my own. Not quite so good for me as vegetable sticks, but certainly a lot more interesting.

What better way to sample the delights of Marvel Bar and break the daily ritual of lettuce and linseeds than with the holy trinity: new year, new me, new beau, new bar! (OK, that’s four, but who’s counting?)

State-of-the-art hunk in tow, I ventured half way along the Fulham Road. I have never noticed the utter glut of eateries, sweeteries and general drinkeries that litter the streets between South Kensington and Fulham Broadway. Only few stand the test of time and many fall flatter than a fat kid chasing a donut. I was very intrigued to see how Marvel would shape up.

Despite co-owner Sam Young being front-runner to play at Madame Middleton’s hen do, I had high hopes for a cracking playlist far removed from the sticky form of cheese commonly found on the streets of Chelsea. Pre-visit probing of a few local friends led me to expect a taste Shoreditch in the land of pashmina-wearing princesses.

The rumours are true, hurrah!

Naked light bulbs, broody lighting (the kind where you can’t quite tell if the guy in the corner is checking you out or not), and funky graphic artwork make you think you’ve landed East. Even the crowd added to the illusion; there was not a slick quiff or pearl earring in site.

Perched on bar stools along a thick wooden counter, we flicked through the cocktail menu. From martinis and bubbly infusions to Marvel’s own take on the classics, they have it covered. I opted for the Honey Monster. I was slightly disappointed not to be greeted by a canary-coloured beast brandishing a bowl of Sugar Puffs but the chunks of fresh ginger muddled with gin and vodka practically made it a detox shake. My new year’s resolution was still going strong.

A few more cocktails under my belt and I ventured to the bathrooms...worth a visit if you fancy a giggle; and no, it’s nothing kinky. A large white wall has been given over to the masses, allowing you to scribble musings for all to see. ‘Nobody knows I am a lesbian’, written in Chelsea scrawl, particularly caught my eye, as Marvel certainly doesn’t strike me as haven for girl-on-girl.

After that revelation I couldn’t stop checking out every other woman. Was the blonde in the corner the secret authoress? After a few dodgy looks I realised they all must think I’m the closet lady lover. My new year’s resolution didn’t quite extend to a change in sexual persuasion. I am British after all.

My quest to try something new at least once a week continues and I would encourage all ardent Fluid-ites to do the same. Why not start with a trip to Marvel and support the East’s infiltration of the West? There is something for everyone here; whatever or whoever you fancy.

It’s the first Chelsea gaff owned by DJs and if you haven’t been invited to the Royal Hen party, it’s a great spot to hear Young on the decks. Better still, the bar staff are super clued up on the art of imbibing. They’ll even ship over some salami from the Italian next door if you get peckish.

We hotfooted it outside before I could be accused of harassing the female customers. Really not sure what the boy made of it all but I’m sure he wouldn’t complain if I did bring a fellow female home.
