Chelsea Potter Review

“Way back this place used to be a potter’s studio”, the barmaid is telling me, “and we still get phone calls asking for pottery advice.”

Half way down the King’s Road the red and white fronted Chelsea Potter, stands snugly on the corner with Radnor Walk, just a hop, skip and a stumble from Waterstone’s and a sniff away from the thick scents of Lush.

Inside, it’s one large room decorated in traditional pub style: lots of wood; couple of Jackpot machines, paintings of the King’s Road circa 1900; red curtains patterned one way, green furnishings patterned in another and a carpet which doesn’t match either. The overall effect is cosy, relaxed, familiar: like being in your favourite Great-Aunt’s living room. Tunes are being played at a level enough to give you a lift without forcing you to shout at your neighbour. A few builders are chuckling heartily at the bar, a group of suits are sitting round a table at the back having a pint out of office hours and an exotic-looking middle aged couple perch on bar stools around one of the building’s three elegant pillars. The clientele is definitely a mixed bunch but on the whole pleasantly low key for a pub on the street not only renowned for being at the forefront of fashion but also once the King’s private road between Whitehall and Hampton Court.

Guest Ales (Greene King IPA and Fuller’s London Pride, when I was there) top the beer list. Otherwise they sell 17 types of wine, jugs of Pimms and, according to the menu, have a ‘dram fine selection of Whiskies’. Food is available and had I not just indulged in far too many free mince pies courtesy of Waitrose on the way, I would have fancied sampling the Stilton and mustard sausages with mash and onion gravy (£6).

The Chelsea Potter is a well-kept, amenable pub. A good place to slip into for a drink in the winter and a pleasant place, I would imagine, to sit outside, underneath it’s attractive hanging baskets, on a sunny day. more

“On a family visit to London last weekend, we were disappointed to find that in 2004 this was the only pub in London that refused to accept a Scottish £10 note. The refusal was not even a very polite one.”

“Can only say in their favour that their Barmaid belinda is great but otherwise the food is overpriced and sparse and the wines are corked on several occasions. Atmosphere is ok though.”

"I found Majingos again... I used to go here when it was based at South Quay in Canary Wharf and has now relocated to Limehouse E14 in case anyone doesn't know. It was good in the old days and I am pleased..." Which venue is this?

"Very bad experience. Booked a table, before paying making sure that the table will not be moved at some point to make space. Looks like the woman taking bookings called Candice will promise you anything..." Which venue is this?
