The Cloisters Review

“We have a strict no dickhead policy,” says Max Keep, launch manager of The Cloisters – a new member’s club in South Kensington. What this means, he tells us – is that this unpretentious, Chelsea hideaway is for “decent ordinary people,” so don’t expect any “yahoo henrys or hardball ravers.”

Located on the ground floor of Chelsea Cloisters flats on Sloane Avenue, you’d never guess this cosy little watering hole was once the area’s vice bar with late night boozing and ladies of the night. The décor is tastefully simple, with hand-crafted oak tables, dim lighting and original photography depicting random London scenes adorning the walls.

With an overabundance of glittery trend-holes in the area, the Chelsea-bred proprietors sought to create a place to escape this scene where friends can chat over good solid drinks mixed with pride by former Groucho Club barman, Artur. The Cloisters offers a tremendous selection of hand picked wines and spirits, particularly Ivan the Terrible – the smoothest vodka out of Moscow today. We enjoyed a range of cocktails with special props going out to the Pinky Martinis – a blend of the botanically enhanced vodka and vermouth, the Espresso Martini shooters, and the Whiskey Sours – concocted with such precision we floated home rather than stumbled.

The membership plan is simple: go in and sign up – staff will register your details, favourite drink and scan your thumbprint (not part of Big Brother Blair’s identity card plot, not to worry). In the future, your thumb scan will unlock the doors, revealing your ID to the bar staff who will have your favourite drink ready should you desire. Memberships are free and include a weekly email outlining upcoming events at the venue.

If you’re looking for a place that serves a nice pint of Guinness or a cool cocktail, and where everybody knows your name (ahem), then the Cloisters is definitely your spot.

“I was recommended this chilled little bar by a friend. It is the perfect place to go for an after work cocktail and catch-up.....”

“This bar is fabulous!! Until finding this little gem I'd given up on bars in Chelsea - the service is fantastic, cocktails are exceptional and most importantly there is no attitude, both the staff and the clientele are extremely friendly.”

“What an excellent little bar. It's hard to find which is no bad thing in that area. The cocktails were excellent and the manager was a really excellent guy that looked after us far more than he had to. I loved the fancy fingerprint door opening system, it made me feel like James Bond. Getting an email from them once a week a great idea. Good atmosphere too, no morons in sight. Loved it! Will definitely go back there.”

“I signed up for free membership at this bar last week and received a free Mojito-one of the best Mojitos i have had in a long time! The atmosphere was great, the bar staff were all very friendly, helpful and seemed to make sure that every person in the bar was taken care of. Now I will tell u the coolest thing about this place-they have a thumbprint scanner on the door which only lets you in if you are member. James Bond stuff or what! When you place your thumb on the door outside it lets you in and also tells the barman on a screen behind the bar your full name and your favourite drink. ”

“Great drinks, the best service, no annoying idiots and they remember my name. Hard to find but GREAT entry system.”

Loved

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
