Admiral Codrington Review
Top 10 things you need to know about the Admiral Codrington:
1) By the time I got to The Admiral Codrington, I was angry. Before arriving, my companion and I had gone for pre-dinner drinks in a pretty Kensington boozer. A sexist barman had questioned whether I really wanted a whole pint (yes, yes I do), and then asked if I first wanted to try the drink I ordered (because clearly I have no idea what a Green King IPA tastes like and what I meant to order was a white wine spritzer). My male companion’s pint of Guinness was poured without a squeak.
2) However, luckily, having dinner at the Admiral Codrington cheered and soothed my shattered feminine nerves quicker than, say, Ryan Gosling in a tight jumper discussing feminist politics (well, almost).
3) Dining takes place in a separate room to the main pub with pale coloured furnishings and a large glass area on the ceiling making the room light and open.
4) Crucially, while eating, you can still hear the pub chatter from next door. I’m a city girl so listening to the low hum of voices in the pub is my equivalent of sitting next to a babbling brook, for calming sounds.
5) The soothing really kicked off when I was presented with a squid starter, lightly battered, with a delicious, tangy chilli sauce. Proving that well-known phrase, “There’s nothing like well-cooked seafood to really pull you out of a grump”.
6) There was a wobbly point at the mains. I had read reviews about the Admiral Codrington having a great buger so ordered it for myself. Actually, the burger was pretty run of the mill, but my companion’s beef stew was delicious.
7) As I would expect from a Kensington restaurant (unlike the previous aforementioned establishment), the waiting staff were extremely polite and helpful, and didn’t suggest that because I was a girl I should forgo my burger for a salad.
8) The staff were also very good and ensuring our wine glasses were regularly filled (which is truly the way to my heart).
9) It was quiet when we arrived at 7pm, but by the time we left, happy, chattering people had filled the tables.
10) So, ta Admiral C, you turned my evening from angry to happy. ...read more

“Ended up inadvertently at 'The Cod' the other night and contrary to some reviews I’ve seen, I had a perfectly pleasant time (mind you I didn’t eat so can’t comment on that except that the menu looked enticing). Arrived by taxi for some reason and never quite got my bearings as the place seemed to be on a back street next to the rear entrances of some of South Ken’s finer department stalls. Have to say I’ve a soft spot for back alley ‘finds’ and even more so when it’s in parts of London you wouldn’t think they’d reach.
Some people I met there have been going intermittently for years and claimed that Fergie used to hang out here. Not sure if that’s a good sign or not but anyway, it makes for good pub tittle-tattle. Edward Codrington, by the way was a sea Captain during the Battle of Trafalgar and the place is appropriately decked out with nautical and British sporting paraphernalia.”

“I've eaten here several times, the rib-eye burger is probably the best burger I've ever eaten - would definately recommend it. The staff are friendly as is the atmosphere. The prices are typical west end prices.”

“Went there 30/12/04 for lunch on recommendation of a friend, and was a little disappointed. It was fairly quite and the service was ok. My wife ordered the cod, which was very salty. The restaurant manager replaced it with steamed sea bass which was fine. I am now informed that we were charged an extra £2 for the different meal. That is not good customer relations to my mind. The bowl of chips that went with the meal was allowed to go cold whilst the meal was changed. Perhaps I should have mentioned that as well, but good service should not come from me. Total bill for lunch for two with three large glasses of wine and half a lager was £80, with the 12.5% service charge. If I had known that the £2 had been added I would have reconsidered the payment of the service charge which is optional. Small point but it makes a difference. Doubt if I would go there again.”

“Full of big posh sods with plums in their mouths blithely waving their gold cards about and shelling out £50 for 6 drinks. Rubbish, unless you're a big posh sod.”

“This seemed like a perfect venue for sunday lunch after a trip to the natural history museum. The bar is cosy, the restaurant is light and airy and the service was friendly but we were treated to hard roast potatoes and chewy beef for about £12 - disappointing for a meal that is so easy to get right. The maltesers with the bill were a nice touch though.”

“Admiral codrington is a nice enough pub, I have never eaten there but they seem to have quite a good little restaurant. However being that I am only 21 and don't where designer shirts and flash large amounts of cash about the place the bar staff seem reluctant to serve me. So good place to go if you can cope with bar staff who must be so underpaid that they are desperate for tips or where you don't mind shouting "oye you get me a pint"”
