Yi-Ban (Docklands) Review

Despite its awkward location Yi-Ban is a first class find as its name suggests. Located above a gym in the desolate wasteland of the Docklands business park, it’s hardly somewhere you would expect to find a bustling Chinese restaurant. So, surprised we were when late on the Wednesday evening when we visited, hungry diners were still arriving in groups.

As soon as we were sat at our table we began swapping theories as to why so many Europeans and Chinese alike are prepared to travel such distance to fill up on what can be found nearer to home. At first we thought perhaps it’s the fantastic view of the river and city airport, which can be enjoyed inside from one of the large round tables (ideal for groups) or outside from the balcony. But on a dark, chilly evening as this was, it was a misplaced theory. It has to be the food we reasoned and spot on we were.

Inside, Yi-Ban has a modest décor. The menu, however, makes up for the rather bland interior design by offering an array of colourful, interesting dishes. We approached our chef’s recommended set menu with unabashed hunger and each dish offered something new to the palette. Non-greasy and light everything from the sesame toast to the Peking duck to the sweet and sour prawns was flawlessly prepared, rich and flavourful.

At the weekends there is live music which can be enjoyed from one of the many dining tables, the separate bar or the lounge area. It is advisable to call ahead for a reservation. Sundays are extremely popular with London’s Chinese community who descent upon Yi-Ban to enjoy the excellent Dim Sum. If getting to the Docklands is a journey you’re not prepared to make, there is a second Yi-Ban located in Chelsea and Chopsticks in Waterloo is owned by the same people.

Getting to Yi-Ban may seem as complicated as getting to China itself but its well worth it. The reasonably priced food is better than the standard fare found in China Town and the view is a lot better. With summertime around the corner and a balcony just waiting to be enjoyed, Yi-Ban is definitely worth a visit.

“Went for lunch with my family. We ordered dim sum and Three Roast with rice (Roast Duck, Char situ and Crispy Pork). Dim sum was okay, nothing special. But what we had on the Three Roast was surprisingly disgusting. The duck and char siu were okay, but the crispy pork was 100 per cent PURE FAT under the skin. How unhealthy!!! Think of the CHOLESTROL!!! We expressed our concern and asked the waitress politely if we could just have the pieces of pork replaced. The answer we got was that "If the pork is fat, then that is how it comes. You can't change it." She said it without thinking. We said we do know that crispy pork do have a bit of fat in it, but not 100 per cent of fat and no meat at all. We realised that we were getting no sense from the waitress, so we asked to speak to the manager. Guess what, her attitude was even worse! "There is nothing wrong with the pork. Either take it as it is or cancel the order. NO CHANGE!" Oh well, that will be the last time you see me eating there. I can imaging what poor ingredients they are using in their other food. And I just wonder if I have asked the two ladies to eat those pieces of crispy pork on the plate, would they eat it....?”

“Ate here for lunch on the way to london and was so pleasantly surprised... the building needs some love and care but once you take the small elevator too the first floor and get seated and then choose, the rest is magic. The food was incredibly good; I thought Ping Pong was good but Yi Ban is the mother of Chinese... the vietnamese spring rolls were succulent and light, the deep fried prawn "thingy" was incredible, the steam scallop duumpling out of this world. But I feel bad telling you all this because the place will be packed the next time I go. It's a well kept secret so don't tell anybody. Fantastic! I'm mouth watering thinking about it and it's breakfast.”

“I went to this resturant yesterday evening for my friends Hen Party. We had a fantastic evening, the staff were friendly and very helpfull, the Jazz singer was fantastic and I would love to go back there with my partner. On paying however they did charge us 2 service charges, one for the drinks and one for the food. Was annoyed by the double tipping as we spent a lot of money and didn't think this was on. However the resturant itself was fantastic and I will be going back.”
