The Gun Review

Book a table at The Gun

Best for: seafood, daily specials, wines by the glass, and probably London’s best alfresco terrace for private parties, weddings and birthday BBQs.

Great: Thames-side alfresco dining come the summer and spring.

We’ve all heard the one about the waiter who, when called over to attend to a fly in a customer’s soup, replies simply, “Don't worry sir, that spider on your bread will soon get him.”

Well, there was no fly in my soup. I didn’t even have soup. There was, however, a Dorset crab hiding in the creamy mash. His companion, the Royal bream fish, tried to smuggle him in under a divinely aromatic blanket of confit baby fennel; crafty! Nice try you sneaky Bream, but you didn’t slip by undetected. Oh we noticed you all right. And yes, you were exquisite.

Billingsgate Fish Market is but a fly’s leap away from The Gun pub and restaurant on the north bank of the Thames, so it’s highly likely both Dorset Crab and Royal Bream swam there earlier in the day through the Docklands waterways; they were still wearing a layer of presentational ‘sea foam’ on my plate, they were that fresh.

Their advance guard, the Isle of Man King Scallop and the kiln-roast honey Salmon, had disappeared (from the starter menu) by the time we arrived for dinner, supposedly so popular that they had ‘sold out’. This was at 7.45pm! On a Monday night! In the middle of nowhere! Who did Scallop and Salmon think I was? Seafood never gets the better of me, and indeed I got the better of it, in the end, with a high plate of six meaty, 4-year old, Duchy Native oysters as a fine substitute starter. They refused to talk, so I tortured them gleefully with some mild green Tabasco sauce, a slice of lemon and a refreshing glass of French Sauvignon Blanc. Yeh, that showed them.

In fact, the responsibility for much of our mouthwatering evening must lie with the fish and their watery habitat (see also ‘Thames view’ below); the Pork Belly having lacked the palatable fortitude to match its sea-based counterpart, and the Pig’s Head Terrine crestfallen in comparison. If only there had been fish for dessert as well.

There was plenty of mysterious conjecture to reveal at the surprisingly (yet, in hindsight, understandably) busy pub and restaurant that wasn’t related to seafood, though. A definite sense of cosiness, for example, could be detected on the rosy cheeks of contented faces sat idly in leather chairs next to the crackling fires. These faces seemed oblivious to the austere world outside, or to the gruesome collection of antique weaponry displayed upon the walls behind them (that’ll be where the pub gets its name from then).

Also, hidden amongst the smiles and alluringly unfamiliar accents of The Gun’s chatty staff was a palpable feeling of bona fide cordiality, almost as though they genuinely took pleasure from serving every diner. This, in spite of their neat waistcoats and white tablecloth scrapers suggesting a finer, more formal state of dining. They even tried to convince me that they offered a complimentary taxi service at lunch times to anyone working in Canary Wharf. I mean, how gullible do you have to be?

This wasn’t the only extravagant claim we humoured. During a tour of The Gun premises - passing old black and white photos, secret historical underground tunnels, toilets with first names, and ceilings filled with metal tankards - we were told what must surely be a yarn of fiction: that the grandest of The Gun’s private dining rooms, The River Room - with its remarkably views across the Thames and own private waiter - is free to hire for groups of 8 or more and comes with a ‘3 courses for £36’ dinner offer. I mean, really, c’mon. Who is going to believe that?

The gathered throng in the restaurant clearly had the measure of what was going on. They had arrived early, most likely directly from work. By 8pm, they were in full swing, and already making light work of the desserts (no doubt why the best dishes sold out so quickly). Sat at every table (except ours) was someone who wore a blazer jacket. The work ties had definitely been loosened or even removed, but the shoes were polished and the hair was washed. A Sky Sports pub, this was not; in manner or expense.

Remember the fly that wasn’t in the soup that I didn’t order? It was found sunning itself on The Gun’s delightful alfresco dining terrace. Although it lived only a short life, it still appreciated this gem of a pub, hidden down a murdery cobbled street; a living museum of English Heritage stature, juxtaposed by the corporate banks of Canary Wharf on one side and The O2 dome on the more

“Great food and a fantastic atmosphere and setting! I visited The Gun with my boyfriend on a Wednesday Friday night. The place has a great buzz with lots of different areas. There were lots of Canary Wharf 'suits' in the bar areas and on the terrace but all were friendly. They also have an outdoor restaurant that opens in the summer which serves Portuguese food. We really loved the food, really interesting flavours and ingredients and all perfectly cooked. My boyfriend had the kid which was really tender. Overall a lovely place which we will definitely come back to.”

“I visited the Gun on Saturday 22nd May 2010 following a stressful week at the coalface. This was my first visit but I was assured that the experience would be a good one having eaten a couple of times at one of their other establishments - the Empress of India near Victoria Park. However, this was to be a decidedly disappointing experience. Overpriced food and tiny portions were the order of the day not to mention haughty and extremely slow service. I was slightly confused given that the Empress of India is actually OK (aside from its peculiar Yorkshire puddings) but the Gun doesn't compare to the best gastropubs knocking around such as the consistently excellent Anchor & Hope in Southwark. All in all, an exceptionally disappointing experience which I will not be repeating. To add insult to injury, the 'voluntary' service charge of 12.5% was automatically added to the bill. This little act of sharp practice made the experience even more disappointing. This was removed when we asked but the presumption that I was going to pay this was certainly not welcome.”

“We had been to The Gun several times before and found it very good, but our last and final visit to the pub was February 13th 2010. The food was average, the portions derisory and the bill extortionate. The service was okay but not deserving of the 13% service charge added to an already outrageously high bill. The Gun has lost it I'm afraid - it's what happens when you put profit before people and try to pretend to be a Michellin star restaurant with Michellin star prices, but come nowhere close to that standard.”

“I went to The Gun the other day with some friends. We were lucky enough to go when the sun was shining and sat out at the Portuguese bbq on the terrace. It was fantastic! The food, the service, the views and the atmosphere, we soaked up the sun with the delicious wafts of the piri piri chicken cooking on the open bbq. A truly summer experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I will be back!”

“What a great find, this place is full of energy and lively people in a good mood - no stuffyiness here! The food was terrific, good ole English hearty food, but well presented and fresh! Great choice of wines as well. The trip out there is really worth it.”

“What a bloody good place the gun is. I had the partridge which was excellent & ended up finishing off a good claret, relaxing in an armchair in front of a roaring fire. Not many places in London you can do that.”

“This pub is amazing. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and the food is second to none. It has the most beautiful decor and stunning outside areas with incredible views of the Thames. It is now my local!”

“Its a lovely pub on the river with amazing outdoor views, good beer, a great wine list and lovely (but rather pricey)food. The real shame about this place though is how bad the staff are - they slow, not very attentive and often get stuff wrong and don't sem to realise the customer is surely always right!? I will still go to this pub cause the location and view are just wonderful but my advise to others would be get your drinks quickly and avoid the bar staff the rest of the time!”
