Top 10 things you need to know about Manhattan Grill:

1) I love a good quay; it's like being by the seaside, only without the irking sand, so it stands to reason Manhattan Grill's location adjacent to Canary Wharf - with its views overlooking the water through floor-to-ceiling windows - was immediately pleasing to me.

2) Less pleasing is Manhattan Grill's residence within a hotel. A fancy hotel – the restaurant is part of the 5-star London Marriott Hotel West India Quay – but a hotel nonetheless.

3) Hark, listen to your cries: "Lacking in atmosphere!" "No creativity!" "No appeal!" "No substance!"

4) To some degree this is true of Manhattan Grill. The long dining room was sporadically occupied by what were conceivably hotel guests, not of the excitable 18-30 holiday kind. It filled up slightly by 9pm, but never truly fulfilled the expectation of a 'buzzing Saturday night'.

5) But creativity, there is aplenty; the chefs behind the open-plan kitchen moved with aplomb, freeform dancing with spatulas and whisks and hunks of meat.

6) And there is appeal in abundance; you can request a complimentary wine tasting of the many Rothschild wines on offer.

7) Simply ask and you'll be invited to the purposefully built counter where you can try before you buy – I'd recommend the 2012 Chilean Merlot, the second cheapest on the menu at £30, it held its own against the more expensive wines.

8) Substance reveals itself in the food and, in particular, the mains which, unsurprisingly, focus on grill dishes, steak in particular. Most of the starters are fish and seafood based, the clam chowder apparently being a favourite among American tourists but still faired pretty well among the Brits (my guest and I).

9) If you opt for steak (and you should) you are presented with a hard choice: USDA Black Angus, or Scottish Aberdeen Angus. I tried both and found the Aberdeen to have a, for lack of a better word, meatier taste and the USDA to be slightly sweeter. Both were cooked perfectly, neither provided disappointment.

10) Manhattan Grill has a lot going for it – creativity, appeal and substance – what it's missing is the crowds but if you're a lover of steak and prefer your atmosphere underdone, this could just be the perfect restaurant for you.
