The Mayflower Review

This is how they used to make ‘em before the days of piped music, big screen TV and er, electricity. Dating from the 17th century, the Mayflower has been one of the most visited pubs south of the river thanks to its reputation among the tourist fraternity.

Don’t let that put you off however as the Mayflower is a small, cosy pub and a great place to relax over a drink. Situated right by the Thames, you can sit in the snug bar or take a seat outside on the jetty-cum-beer garden to watch more energetic revelers cruise past on hired party boats!

A good day to visit is on a Sunday – especially if you have been on the tiles the previous night! With a full menu and small restaurant upstairs it’s an excellent spot to wile away the afternoon – and more than a match for similar pubs by the river in Hammersmith.

Meals are of the hale and hearty variety with a good range of fish dishes – every main is around £10. One thing to bear in mind, the bar certainly is ‘cosy’ – i.e. quite small so if you are bring a group of people or have trouble with mobility you could well find the place being too cramped for your liking.

In addition, while the Mayflower itself is a good pub, there isn’t much else in the way of entertainment in the immediate area and midweek can be very sleepy. If you’re looking for a ‘challenging’ weekend then this may not be the ideal venue.

However, for a taste of old London (especially if you’re from overseas) then the Mayflower is for you. Kick back, relax and watch the world go by…

“It is a beautiful old pub. Chock full of history, warmth, character and friendly waitstaff! Always have a lovely time with mates, and enjoy the flexibility of the outdoor dining, pub seating of chairs and booths, as well as the nice restaurant proper, which is upstairs.”

“On first entering the pub i thought it was very cosy & oldy worldy too. But the next time i reserved a table for a birthday in the restaurant, i enquired what type of food they do, and had a very rude reply "we have over 250 things on the menu i can't list them all" i did mean english, thai, indian etc. The food was nice, but overpriced. It's such a shame because i would have liked to return to this pub as it is local to me.”

“Food is awful, chef is rude and the staff are surly and unhelpful. Avoid the mayflower if you value good food and good serice and value for money.”

“This pub has been my best find on the river. Great surroundings, loads of history and a jetty over the Thames. What more could you ask for... Well the food is also top notch, and I tend to travel there from the city for lunch. Its a bit of a journey but the great home cooked fayre make it worth while. ”

“I stumbled upon this pub recently and loved the olde worlde cosiness. It is a great place to visit for a pint and bag of crisps but do beware of frozen food, put together without due care. My monkfish was tough to cut through, with partner's fish pie cold in middle. Staff did not apologise for these errors, merely asking why we had not told them the pie was colder sooner??? No apology, no discount ... no return to restaurant!”
