Grand Union Camden Review

Book a table at Grand Union Camden

Best for: after-work drinks; group functions; gourmet burgers.

Great: pub food; cocktails; music.

“Do one thing, and do it well”; so goes the maxim. Don’t spread yourself too thin, and become a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Experimentation and eclecticism are dangerous temptations that can only lead to confusion and despair. It’s a school of thought which has worked wonders for AC/DC and McDonalds, to name but two examples, but when it comes to London restaurants, uniformity can become a pitfall; one which I’m pleased to say Grand Union Camden sidesteps with aplomb.

The original and – whisper it – best branch of the popular Grand Union franchise, this all-encompassing bar by Camden Road Overground station, is the Beck, nay, the Bowie of chain restaurants, blending styles and influences with reckless abandon and consummate ease. At once a pub, club, salon, diner and boudoir, it truly is all things to all men.

Looking for a quiet night out, pensively nursing a cocktail in the sultry half-light of the street corner? The raised alcove in the venue’s secluded east wing should be able to accommodate you nicely. On the run from the law and laying low ‘til the heat dies down? The American-diner-style leather booths to the right hand side have you covered, leopard-print wallpaper and all. Organising a raucous high-school reunion with a tropical theme? I thought so. Perhaps the full-size Hawaiian straw hut at the back of the room might be to your liking.

It’s testament to the venue’s immense versatility that such contrasting goals can be attended to simultaneously, and that such chalk-and-cheese environments can co-exist happily under one roof. By rights, it should equate to a garish pile-up of ambient noise and clashing colour schemes, but the huge, central bar acts as a natural breakwater between parties, conciliatory resident DJs provide a subtly funky soundtrack and the friendly staff are always on hand to ensure that a great night out is had by all.

The menu is suitably diverse, but quality remains high whether you’re looking for burgers, hot dogs, ribs, pizzas or salad. Portions are generous – the Fully Loaded Burger with copious Cheddar, bacon and onion rings is especially daunting, requiring all sorts of facial gymnastics to eat whole – and reasonably priced, with most main courses ranging between £7-9.

The drinks list follows suit with a selection of classic cocktails (£7.50) rubbing shoulders with interesting new concoctions: the Braeburn Pie, served in a jam jar with vodka, apple juice and cinnamon, is a particularly punchy little number, ideal for preventing post-food lethargy.

It shouldn’t work, or even make any sense, but the Grand Union Camden manages to cater to just about every whim, whether you’re en route to a trendy night out down the road in Camden or looking to indulge your every burger-related fantasy in a cosy, risk-free environment. Variety is the spice of life, and, it would seem, of burger bars as well. more

“I checked out the Grand Union for the first time since its re-fit last night and was really impressed with the new look. The back room is now open all the time, which more than doubles its capacity, and there's a totally different feel about the place. There are retro booths hidden round the side of the bar and plenty more seating, which means it now feels like a proper burger joint, which it always billed itself as. On top of that, there's table football, great music and still not that many people know about it. The Grand Union just got good.”

“Having recently moved to Camden a work colleague recommended I try the Grand Union for a few drinks with friends on a Thursday evening. We only intended to have a bottle of wine between the three of us and then move on somewhere else but we ended up there until closing time! Having sat down with a bottle of the house white, which was really great for just over a tenner we watched loads of their burgers get taken past us and decided we couldn’t resist trying one. Spoilt for choice we decided to order a different one each so we ended up with a smoked chilli, a greek lamb and a cheese and bacon. The only downside was that we all lost complete respect for one anothers table manners whilst eating but this was quickly rescued by the satisfaction that comes after eating a grand union burger! Unlike many bars in Camden where the cocktail list is either non-existent or intimidatingly long and complex the list here is a small selection of classics with a few house specialities thrown in for good measure. The ginger aussie behind the bar was helpful and pointed out the Bramble, the Gin Garden (which sounds so weird but is actually awesome) and the Old Fashioned (scary amounts of alcohol considering how easy to drink and tasty this is!) Not being cocktail connoisseurs we were glad of his advice and he turned out to be spot on.”

“My friend had a birthday party here last Saturday in the back bar, and we absolutely loved it! The DJ was amazing, very funky mix! My girlfriends and I really enjoyed ourselves dancing, and drinking the cocktails! As for the previous entry, we must have had the same American barman as she did, because he was a good laugh, and not too bad on the eye either! ;P The only negative thing about our experience, was that the fishcakes we ordered took quite along time to get to us, but in saying that they were quite busy, so I guess its understandable. Overall, I would totally recommend the Grand Union for a fun night out!”

“I had to wait 1 hour for the main course, only to get really low quality food. When I complained to the manager, he was rude and dismissive. The chef even came out of the kitchen to greet me with a 'am really pissed off' comment, not understanding how anybody could complain about burnt vegetables.”

“We'd reserved an area for up to 10-15 people but were given an area for 6! The management were rude, aggressive and unsympathic to our requested and agreed requirements. If they couldn't accommodate us, then why did they take our booking?”

“Went to the Grand Union with some friends on Friday Nov. 3rd, and we had a blast! Not only were the cocktails superb and extremely reasonably priced (mixed by two very very cute blokes, 1 American I think, and 1 English), but the atmosphere was kool! They had a live DJ playing in the back area, and the place had a real buzz about it. We didn't have anything to eat, so I can't comment on the food. But we had a heck of a good time at the Grand Union, and would higly recommend it to others! Try it out, you won't regret it!!! Cheers! Kat”

“Me and three of my friends paid the Grand Union a visit on Saturday night, and we weren't disappointed! The food was amazing (i recommend the bangers and mash!) and really reasonably priced. The bar area was lively, with fab music and a great atmosphere! I thoroughly recommend the Grand Union for fun and funky night out!!”
