The Lido Cafe Review

Best for: calm, candlelit dining experiences, whiling away the summer nights.

Great: place to eat a different kind of café food.

Summer time rolls around during June or July. If you live in the UK, summer is one week long, with not very much left at the end. When the sun eventually comes out, we Brits tend to run around in flip flops, raiding the beer stocks at Sainsburys and dining alfresco until our food is covered in grass or flies.

We spend summer afternoons doing anything we can to make the most of the sun before it disappears and we’re left remembering what it looked like through old Facebook statuses and badly captured iPhone snapshots.

Sunbathing, park games, horsing around; it all works up a bit of an appetite and The Lido Café in Brockwell is the perfect place for winding down at the end of a nice summer day. When I went on a Saturday night it was definitely summer but not too bright. In fact, it was grey which meant that the Lido Café had to provide me with an experience to make this summer night more cheerful than the weather.

When I arrived, the candles were already twinkling and dancing to a sweet summer tune and the restaurant was filled with nice music and hushed chatter as the staff busied themselves.

The swimming pool that sits in the middle of Brockwell Lido - of which the Lido Café is part of - was swaying calmly, enjoying the evening. The Lido Café invites a calm atmosphere. The décor inside is extremely cute with a nice nautical theme mixed with barrels (yes wooden barrels) and a nice view of the bar. It is unlike most other bar/restaurant décor but still pleasant.

Seated with a little jar of the tastiest olives I’ve ever eaten, I studied the unusual café menu: spirits, wines, beers, ciders, and cocktails which are (and will always be) a beautiful way to begin an evening. Choosing a Rangoon, I looked over the dinner menu.

Cafés bring to mind all day big breakfasts which usually include eggs, sausages and beans or a rather sad looking cheese sandwich or a bland cheese and tomato omelette where the only thing you can taste is the tomato. Expect delicious choices such as Charcuteries and mains at The Lido Cafe, which include sirloin steak with posh chips and a red wine sauce.

The Lido Cafe doesn’t just do posh stuff; it does regular belly fillers such as burgers as well. Choosing the fancy dry aged, rare breed beef burger with triple cooked chips, I was most pleased with my order when it arrived. In front of me: a full mini pail of chips and a beautiful burger with a nice accompanying salad. I could enjoy a calm evening with beautiful food. Brilliant.

Tucking in, my accomplice and I found ourselves spending time laughing and joking, happily oblivious to the darkening sky which made the candles even more luminous.

Our choices for dessert included a sumptuously summery rhubarb trifle. It was beautiful. Sweet, smooth and delicate, it was the perfect way to end our dining experience.

If you want a calm dining experience with no fuss, no muss and nothing but beautifully prepared food, then look no further than a must in summer dining, the Lido Café. It will bring a nice hush to your busy day and create memories of summer days spent having fun and nights spent gazing at the blue pool waters over a glass of red wine with those you like best.
