“Last night my partner and 2 friends went there for the first time in 8 years. Before we even entered, my partner was asked by the burly bouncer (who himself had a hat on) to remove his cap, only to walk in and see three other people inside with their caps on! The waiter then proceeded to show us to a table for 2 when there were 4 of us. After waiting 20 mins to order, we waited another 20 mins for our drinks (which weren't even cocktails.) The starters arrived and my partner and I had ordered a Satay platter to share. The squid was not cooked, and the lamb was so tough it looked (and tasted) like it had been cooked many night's before and reheated. The prawn satay was one tiny prawn holding on for dear life to the satay stick, also bizarrely there was no peanut sauce in sight. For the main course the four of us shared a very chewy 'Lazy Beef', a Snapper that was covered in onions and peppers with no taste whatsoever, a Lamb Massaman which was really oily and tasteless and a Thai papaya salad which consisted of shredded lettuce, carrots, 3 beans and a sprinkling of papaya drowned in sweet chilli sauce. I had to ask for extra limes and fish sauce as it was so sickly sweet. The fish sauce finally arrived after 2 waiters telling me that the kitchen did not have it(!). As everyone knows fish sauce is a staple ingredient in Thai/Malaysian food. Overall we were all extremely disappointed, especially when the bill included service charge, and the waitress had spilt the fish ”

“I cannot praise the Satay Bar highly enough. Our party of six (ranging from 12 to 53 yr) were all catered for admirably. My partner, who has spent a lot of time in the Far East, said the Singapore Noodles were the best he had ever had. My Penang Fish Curry was sublime as was my starter - Crab Fishcakes. Apart from the buzzy atmosphere the one thing that deserves particular praise is the staff. The manager is immensely professional as well as being extremely personable. The staff are attentive and efficient. I would most certainly go back.”

“I'm not sure how long ago reviewer Mikey visited Satay Bar - as we enjoyed an absolutely stunning evening there last night, and couldn't disagree more with his description of it. Perhaps things have changed since then. Satay Bar is a small, laid-back, friendly place to eat, right in the centre of Brixton. The starters (ave. £4-6 each) were far beyond my expectation - mouthwatering and certainly plentiful for your money. The mains, to boot, were extremely tender (we had the beef and duck dishes) and were gorgeous! We would recommend Satay Bar to anyone who enjoys their food and is ready for a good night out. ”

“Hmmmm... took my lady here and was a bit disappointed. The starters and mains arrived a little too quickly and were pretty plain affairs for the £10-ish price tag. Not bad but not spectacular either. You have to run the gauntlet a bit to get in, especially (i imagine) if you are a woman. It was a little difficult to have an intimate tete a tete, with the goons learing at you from over the plastic picket fence that separates bar and restaurant. But it seems to be a hit with the locals and sure is vibrant. - just not what I was after, however...”

“The Satay bar is a gem in the heart of Brixton. The indonesian specialties are a real delight (especially the Rendang Ayam chicken and coconut rice), the staff is attentive and the athmosphere is laid back, unpretentious but cool. Thursday nights are particularly attractive with live music (soul/rnb acoustic). The DJ nights at the weekend are also a real treat. Highly recommended.”
