Hootananny Review

Replacing that local favourite the Hobgoblin, Hootananny opened its doors in September 2007 as 'London's first ceilidh bar'. This a Scottish themed pub, with a sister pub in Inverness and the opening night saw a mighty Scottish contingent give their support. Some had flown down from North of the border especially for the night and were visiting London for the first time. There were bag pipes galore and Saor Patrol from Kincardine playing and the pub was heaving with a great atmosphere.

Positioned about half way between Herne Hill overland and Brixton station, this pub has a fairly prime location on the cross roads of Effra Road and Brixton Water Lane. The Thai food on offer is tasty and very reasonable priced. Shame they couldn't have haggis on the menu. Beers are not as cheap as they were under the Hobgoblin guise and are now in line with the other pubs in London being over £3 a pint. Not sure if its only temporary but there was no McEwans or Tennants on tap that i could see off. Surely to be a true Scottish pub you must have some Scottish lager?

Went in for a drink whilst England were playing at rugby and i was surprised at the vocal support. If this had been in Scotland, the noise when any team playing and scoring against the ol' enemy would have been deafening. My Scottish drinking drinking partner commented as much to someone she thought was Scottish standing at the bar, "this is Brixton ya know" was the English response... so where are you all? Apparently 5,000 Scottish residents are based in the Lambeth Borough.

Unlike many London pubs, the Hootananny is blessed with having a lot of space, both outside in the beer garden and inside the two bar areas - one has the music stage, dance floor and ample seating and the other has the large screen and ample dinning space. So why did they remove the pool table?! I can understand pubs that are tight on space, wanting to maximize dinning tables for their gastro fodder but the Hootananny has, in my humble opinion, more than enough room to accommodate one of the fastest disappearing pub features in London.

Staff are friendly and mostly Scottish and yes there are lots of tartan and some kilts on display. The Hootananny is still a decent local and worth popping on for a taste of Scotland.

“Went to Hootananny this weekend. Loved it, fab beer garden loads of flowers and parasols in a big space, the live music poured out of the venue, it was a funk band when I went, friends and I partied till 3am for free - good DJs. Its Ska on Fridays, live music every night they say. I'd highly recommend it. Oh and had a good Thai meal as well.”

“A very individual pub with an atmosphere of its own. This pub typifies this part of South London with people from all walks of life socialising together with no tension. Partly due to the scented cigarettes that drift through the pub. Excellent pub to watch football with its large screen. It's one of the biggest pubs in the area with a larger room that hosts comedy nights and club nights. In the summer, the beer garden is packed with friendly locals. Situated on a nice road close to Brockwell Park, this pub is definitely worth the visit.”

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
