The Savannah Review

Book a table at The Savannah

Top 10 things you need to know about The Savannah bar and restaurant:

1) Euston is not the first place that springs to your mind when fore-tasting an enjoyable night out in London. So is The Savannah Bar & Restaurant’s menu of fusion delicacies worth the commute?

2) Ignore the traffic of Euston Road and the turquoise colossus of UCL Hospital, and venture into a secondary road. To reach The Savannah, you’ll have to walk through the vaguely clinical reception of The Wesley Hotel – not a particularly exciting kick-start to your evening.

3) The modern furniture is supposed to recall “the open spaces of the savannah”. It actually has a bit of a Scandinavian feel.

4) It’s Friday night, and the dining room is deserted. It’s therefore surprising to be told that the duck breast has run out – it must have proven itself too popular.

5) Despair not: there’s a whole menu promising to combine European classics with exotic flavours. Whether it really does that, however, is questionable. The fried shrimp starter is greasy, nothing like the Japanese tempura suggested by the menu; two spots of mango purée will not make this a fusion dish. And to marinate a steak in miso sauce is not enough to give it an exotic kick, especially if you only serve it with tomatoes and asparagus.

6) The “fusion restaurant” tag doesn’t really fit The Savannah. Its attempt to combine different cuisines is too shy, not bold enough. Classic British dishes like pork belly and lamb come under extravagant yet ultimately pretentious names. Disappointment is inevitable.

7) If The Savannah abandoned its exotic ambitions, it would be a fair hotel restaurant. The meat is indeed cooked well and the dishes are beautifully presented. Even the king of the savannah knows you must not bite off more than you can chew.

8) Also, to guide you through this winding road of outlandish aspirations, you’ll find generous, polite and impeccable staff. Let them show you the way.

9) The restaurant’s ethically sourced ingredients, which come from local businesses, are another source of pride. Knowing that your free-range chicken comes from near Luton makes the whole experience more ethical (if less exotic).

10) This is not an experimental fusion restaurant. But if you find yourself stuck in Euston, your train cancelled, inexplicably craving for baobab-sauce-infused duck breast, why not give it a go (as long as they haven’t run out)?

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
