Top 10 things to know about Ichiryu Hakata Udon House:

1) It will be your saviour during a shopping spree. Let's be honest, the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street is a bit of a restaurant wilderness. But Ichiryu fills the "Oxford-Street-shopping-pit-stop-that's-not-overpriced-or-fast-food" niche perfectly.

2) But the relaxed ambience and quick turnaround of the dishes will give you the sense of an upmarket fast food joint – in a good way. Something the restaurant group, which also owns Japan Centre and Shoryu, seems to have effortlessly refined over the years.

3) Refreshingly, the pared down decor lets the food do the talking. You'll find no Instagram-grabbing light fixtures made from plant pots or chairs crafted from salvaged crates here.

4) Instead, it's all about the noodles. Despite being served in already generous portions, the udon noodles here are so light and moreish, you'll want to order a second bowl immediately.

5) Sit at the counter and watch the chefs preparing the noodles and tempura. According to the waiter, the noodles are actually made at the restaurant group's "central udon-making location". You'll soon be wanting to break into this secret location and slurp your way to udon-induced heaven.

6) Make sure to combine the noodles with the various toppings. Don't miss the signature niku beef featuring tender sukiyaki beef, kamaboko fish cake and ontama egg – the richness of the putty-like egg yolk, saltiness of the wakame seaweed and umami hit of the bonito broth give the dish an intense depth of flavour.

7) You'd struggle to eat anywhere else as well for £20 in Central London. The set menu includes four light-as-a-kite pieces of tempura; the signature niku beef udon; and a matcha sundae. It's available all day, every day.

8) It's not often something so garishly green tastes so good. Resembling a deflated Incredible Hulk, the matcha ice cream sundae is a masterstroke. Delve into palate-cleansing matcha ice cream, topped with chocolate brownies, before discovering chewy cornflakes amongst a thin layer of sticky caramel. 

9) There's no need to head into nearby Soho for cocktails first. Ichiryu has a good selection of cocktails, including a mojito with yuzu, and a sake, lychee and rum concoction.

10) With the likes of udon, Hakata buns and ramen on the menu, you’ll experience authentic Hakata cooking here – you'd expect nothing less as the restaurant group's owner hails from the province.
