Cau Review

Cau is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things we learnt about the Cau restaurant when we visited:

1) Move aside Garfunkels and Byrons, there is a new Cau in town and it’s from a top pedigree. Cau restaurant comes from the owners of the Gaucho group of restaurants.

2) Cau is meant to be a younger, funkier version of Gaucho. Think burgers and steaks without the stuffiness of dining next to bankers in suits.

3) They are aiming to take over the restaurant scene in regional towns, although you can hardly call the Blackheath branch I went to ‘regional’ as it’s only 12 minutes from London Bridge Station.

4) As Cau is owned by restaurant royalty, it’s hardly surprising it has such a strong brand image. You walk in and immediately you can’t help but notice the blue sky wallpaper and the green grass imagery on the ceiling. Then, staff approach with badges saying ‘Cau boy’ and ‘Lean on me’.

5) It is a Buenos Aires inspired menu with a modern twist. If traditional is what you are after, there is another Argentinean restaurant a few metres away from Cau. Judging from the queues of people flooding into Cau on a nondescript Wednesday evening, it’s most definitely out with the old and in with the new.

6) The steamed mussels starter I had with coconut and coriander had extra spice added to give it that extra kick. The meat was dreamily tender, like the puffy clouds I kept staring into on the walls.

7) The real reason you go to Cau is to satisfy those carnivorous cravings and it doesn’t disappoint. I had the Tapa De Cuadril, thinly sliced rump steak, which is flash grilled and literally melts in your mouth.

8) As full as I was, I still had to try even their kid’s portion size of their house special dessert, Cornflake ice cream sundae. Yes you read it right: Cornflake flavoured ice cream. Dr Kellogg would have approved.

9) Their wine list is handily divided into ‘Nice’ and ‘Very Nice’ wines aka the cheap and the expensive section. Unsurprisingly, a large selection is from Argentina; given Gauchos have their own vineyards in Argentina.

10) This is one Cau that won’t be going away anytime soon. In fact it will have multiple offspring soon. In the pipeline for 2014 are 5 new restaurants in London.
