The Latchmere Review

The Latchmere is featured in these Guides:

Admittedly, I’ve never been a huge supporter of the traditional pub. Perhaps it’s the harsh overhead lighting. Or the outdated keno machine collecting dust in the corner. Or maybe it’s the leather-faced pensioner at the end of the bar, thoroughly engaged in his lager. Whatever the reason, the pub doesn’t provide enough atmosphere, enough class or simply put, enough fun to suit some of my drinking tastes.

Having said that, there have been moments in my drinking career in which my opinion has reversed. Usually at the end of a declaration like, “No I don’t think it’s OK to pretend it’s my birthday to get free shots.” In the past, I have indeed been made to look like a hypocrite on more than one occasion. And after my trip to the Latchmere pub in Battersea, I will admit that my take on the English pub has been turned on its head.

Stylishly decorated with high ceilings, ornate mouldings and dark oak tables, the Latchmere has the feel of a warm loft. It’s spacious; with seating available at several tables, a lengthy bar and leather couches lining a fireplace. Drinks come in at an average price and the menu offers dishes such as the Latchmere salad – cajun chicken, bacon, olives, and cherry tomatoes – as well as a vegetarian menu, at decent prices.

Tangibles aside however, the Latchmere provides something unique to the pub experience. It’s not your standard ‘open-up-and-say-ahhhhh’ type booze trough. It’s got the feel of a library, or maybe a theatre. Indeed, it is located directly below the renowned Latchmere Theatre which regularly hosts new comedy acts and supports theatre productions from new writers. Most importantly, it offers that extra bit of class and extra bit of atmosphere that so many pubs can lack. Definitely worth a visit.

“If you like football and ale, then downstairs is a fairly decent place to hang out (food's not too shabby either). The real draw here though is the theatre upstairs. True immerse theatre in a small environment. Much more value for money that any West End pieces. And it's only a bus ride home (or to Clapham Junction - worth the trek). Great plays, cheap drinks and loads of really nice, culturally interesting, beautiful young ladies (the Irish redhead with the glasses, especially. She was a stunner!)”
