The Draft House Westbridge Review

The Draft House Westbridge is featured in these Guides:

"It's got a lot of classic Guinness ads on the wall"
"Yeah, but how would you describe it?"
"Nu cool"
"Nu cool? My God man, we are past it. Over the hill. Finished. The kids won't understand a word."

And it continued. At the Westbridge Draft House, home of the third, a gastropub littered with pop art, wooden tables and a burgeoning crowd.

The beer menu is demarcated into geographical locations: The Americas, Europe, and Australia; and a “Home of The Third” section that caught my attention, proclaiming that “beer is a neglected treasure”, and therefore each pint should comprise three different 1/3 pints. I agreed and summoned the longhaired manager for two orders of such thirds. I held back from suggesting he get a haircut. Must be part of the nu cool look everyone is ranting and raving about.

The beers kept us satiated for some time, with my “Unusual Thirds” selection comprising the Paulaner Weissbier - a German white beer with a slight hint of banana, Schremser Bio Roggenbier – sweeter tasting and rye based, and the Rosarda - a bit duller than the other two, and almost artificially sweet. As you can see, this thirds idea is quite conducive to turning two grumpy old hacks like ourselves into a parody of the Pinot Noir-loving characters from the movie Sideways engaging in sesquipedalianism*.

My fellow reviewer started acting impatient, and to keep him docile we placed an order of Irish Rock Oysters, and the Hot Torizo sausage. Both arrived promptly and accompanied the next round of thirds: Wandle Ale, Porterhouse Red, and Bitter & Twisted.

I scanned across the room to check the clientele. We’re looking at a mixture of creative types, weary-eyed office workers who possibly owned and knew how to control a skateboard in a previous life, couples sick of watching Britain’s Got Talent, and obviously the nu cool crowd that people just won’t shut up about. You get the feeling that the people who come here are staying for a while – you don’t see many nervous over the shoulder glances that can characterise bland/near-the-tube-station pubs.

By this stage our mains had arrived, a filling Draft House Chicken Salad for me, and from all accounts a well cooked Pan-Fried Salmon & Dill Fishcakes for my companion.

I should point out that even with all the nu cool about the joint, there was now some old school flavour about the music with a Gil Scott Herron classic getting heads nodding. Intrigued, I sourced from the manager that the style of the establishment, the choice of art, and the music do not adhere to any central theme, but rather are an intersection of ideas and experiences collected by the three owners. Sneakily, the manager also convinced us that maybe we’d like a cheese board.

And cheese board we did. Normally safe affairs used to prolong an evening, the serving in front of us stood out. Not only in choice of cheeses, but also in choice of accompaniments. Take, for example, the horseradish and beetroot dip – an unlikely combination culminating in a rich earthy colour - and the slightly spicy and savoury horseradish offset by the more balanced taste of the beetroot.

I finally grasped the size of the beer menu. It’s big. And there are hidden gems. As I noticed during a less than sober scan towards the end of the evening, Little Creatures, a little known beer even in it’s native Western Australia. Had I seen this earlier I would have saved myself time and completed the review in one line: “Go there, they serve Little Creatures!” That particular beer does it for me, but given the size of the beer menu, the friendly staff, and relaxed clientele, everyone is likely to find their hidden gem.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
