Gazette Brasserie Description

Gazette Brasserie is featured in these Guides:

Gazette is an authentic brasserie in the style of local French village cafés. With true hospitality one can find at anytime during the day something to suit the occasion: an early breakfast, a comfortable chill out with a glass of wine in the lounge, a business lunch or a romantic night out. It offers a pleasant atmosphere of well-being.

Charming, character full and simple… This sums up Gazette and the design certainly sets the tone. An 'menhir' stone from Paimpol on the east coast of Brittany welcomes you together with an old Patisserie marble table, solid oak floor all over and for the walls

a polished plaster in a metallic and chocolate theme, the upper floor opens up through a glass and wood balustrade onto a large room seating 60 guests with comfortable leather banquette, cousins and thwarts, mirrors and nacre chandelier.

In the Bar area the 3 pieces counter was brought from Lille in Northern France and dates back from the 1930’s when it was design for a local bistrot. It seats 8 Guests.

The lounge has comfortable leather sofas available for chilling out while catching up on the TV news, read the papers available everyday, for pre-dinner aperitif or a fine brandy from the digestives cabinet.

Set in the Alcove area is an old farm cooker from the 1900’s, built by the Godin manufacturer it was recovered from a field in the coal mining regions of northern France and restored to offer an original communal table with a glass tabletop for 10 persons. The ground floor room seats 30 guests.

Gazette also offers serious “alfresco” dining on the plaza with a beautiful large terrace seating 40 guests and facing south just a few yards from the river. more

“Firstly the location, don't come here unless you like parking at the back of a dodgy industrial estate and hunting for the restaurant amongst blocks of flats. We arrived for our meal and were told there was no record of our booking despite booking by phone at lunchtime that day. It turned out that someone at the restaurant had booked us in for the wrong time on the wrong day. Thankfully it was a Wednesday and not too busy so there was room for us. In the course of sitting down and being offered drinks we were spoken to by three different waiters and rushed in to ordering wine. Having ordered the steak we were kept waiting 45 minutes as all waiters that night (under-staffed) were serving two large groups. There is no excuse for this as a large group would have booked in advance so the restaurant should have laid on more staff. When our meals turned up I was thoroughly disappointed - sitting next to some limp salad with a vinegar dressing was a piece of overcooked tough steak.”

“Yes, it's a brasserie in a fairly new-build residential block East of Wandsworth bridge, but this is an astonishingly good place to spend an evening eating and drinking extremely well. High quality, skilled cooking of good ingredients and a great atmosphere. Always several specials on as well as the core menu. OK value for what it delivers. Charming service. Very, very French. Really very good wine list full of interesting bottles. Glassware is better than you'd expect. Decent availability of a selection of wines by the glass and half bottle. Kids' food too. All in all, I had a superb evening because this place gets it all consistently right and there's a sense of hospitality and fun on top of the professionalism.”

“Great neighbourhood restaurant but even if you have to travel a long way I very much doubt that you would be disappointed. Warm welcome and wonderful hearty, nourishing food. The co-owners Walter and Pascal are great hosts and I would be happy to treat the restaurant as my twice daily dining room. If only I could!”

“Overall a very disappointing experience. Having read some reviews I thought it worth trying. However I was very disappointed by the grubbiness of the glass table over the rustic oven. What could have been quite fun was overshadowed by the dirtiness of it. Especially when one was expected to use it for one's bread! The food was very sub-standard. The bread was doughy and had a rancid taste. The chips tasted as if they'd been cooked in years old oil and were inedible as were the dishes of spinach and mushrooms, both of which had an overpowering taste of burnt garlic. The bavette was overly salted and the steak was over-cooked and tough. As to the presentation, my prawn starter arrived in what at first appeared to be a tupperware container but turned out to be a pressed glass jar whipped straight from the fridge and plonked on the table. Two starters were served in Le Creuset saucepans from which it was difficult to eat. The wine, while very nice, was decanted at the table in an over-elaborate procedure which resulted in much spillage. It seemed out of place with the rest of the restaurant's theme. In fact the overall impression was one of schizophrenia as they clearly weren't sure if they wanted be rustic french or chic sophisticated. The price would have been just passable had the food and service not been lamentably below par.”

“We went to Gazette last night on the recommendation of a friend and were both seriously impressed. The service was spot on, and the food to die for. The steak melted off my plate, served with proper homemade chips and bernaise sauce. Even the butter tastes better!! I would eat here every night if I could, 10 out of 10.”

“Gazette is the best restaurant I have been to for a very very long time. I visited twice already and both times I had a great meal. The chef is very creative and the food fresh. The menu is really fun because it looks like a newspaper with a huge wine list, I haven’t counted but these guys are nuts, I stopped at 160 something, plus they have a lot of wine by the glass and carafe. Gazette do the all day thing with what seems a very good breakfast. The upstairs room has a private room and a wine cellar you can actually visit. Prices are very reasonable and the staff great. Love it, love it, love it.”

The food at Gazette consists of a “menu principal” changing seasonally with classics such as hot foie gras, Beef tartare, mussels Marinières, roasted chicken or tasty risotto. It also offers a large selection of “plat du jour” with 4 starters and 4 main courses and desserts changing daily for each visits to hold a welcoming surprise.

The cuisine is simple and generous and is based on provincial cooking, the serving and sharing element and conviviality of the table makes it a very special experience recalling the warmth and cordiality of true French cuisine.

Gazette offers a selection of 170 references from well-established but also upcoming European wine regions. A lot of the wines are also available by the glass or by the carafe.

You can either choose from the list or walk straight into the wine cellar and choose a bottle directly from the shelves.

The bar holds a selection of fine Beers, from the organic draft beer produced at the Meantime brewery in Greenwich to a fantastic selection of Belgium and northern France beers or the local Battersea porter.
