The Red Lion Review

Following the trend set by The Sun and The Bridge, The Red Lion is yet another pub in the Barnes vicinity that's had a complete make-over, transforming itself from a staunch honest local into a 'gastro-pub'. Located on the junction for Barnes Pond and the main road between Hammersmith and Roehampton, The Red Lion is in a great spot.

The Red Lion itself has a history of nearly 300 years back to 1718, when it was first registered as a public house known as 'The Strugglers'. No doubt it helped inebriate and releive the local country community from their every day hardships and struggles. Sadly the building was destroyed by fire in 1835 and was then rebuilt in its present shell along with the name - The Red Lion.

So down to the nitty gritty of the refurbishment..... with a paint job on the outside (that strangely looks like an undercoat by day) and candle lit tables, The Red Lion looks very inviting in the evening. The bar has now opened up from its previous format and is running alongside one wall, with a strong chrome metallic theme - taps, lamp shades and the bar top itself all match. There is still the ecleptic mix of chairs and tables, and the two comfortable sofas in front of the fire place, all feeling more intimate then ever, if not perhaps a little secluded. Starters are around £5 and a main course £10, you could have 'Sweet Pear & Walnut salad, with Watercress, Rocket & Parmesan' for £4.95 followed by a '21-day Aged, Oxfordshire 10oz Sirloin Steak, with Shitake Mushrooms, Sweet Potato Dauphinoise & Red Wine Jus' for £14.25, wine is on the expensive side at around £18 a bottle.

The clientele seemed to be unsure of whether to treat The Red Lion as a restaurant or a pub. With food at restaurant prices and it must be said restaurant quality it is easy to see the confusion, especially as once the kitchen closed at 10pm, chefs were transfering the food from the kitchen through the main eating area to an outside building. Not too much of a problem but rather annoying for those sitting by the outside door which was constantly being left open allowing very chilled autumn air to seep through.

The outside seating area has improved beyond recognition - tables that aren't falling apart and a pristine lawn that would be perfect for bowls. This is sure to attract hordes of punters in the summer months returning from either the Wetland Centre or Richmond Park.

Gone are the days when you could pop into The Red Lion to watch the footy on the big screen or prop yourself on the bar and drink anonymously and heavily. This pub has gone up market, the food is excellent, the decor is pristine, the beer garden is superb and the staff are highly efficient. But.... the quetion remains to whether there is a market round here for yet another 'gastro pub'? And is there going to be anywhere left round this part of London to go and have a good honest pint, in a drinking environment with your mates? more

“Some years ago while living in Barnes,I freqeunted the Red Lion and found the atmosphere warm & welcoming...(Kiwi girls x 2 in particular) However on a recent visit I am disapointed....where are the smiley faces...prompt service & yummy food...oh dear!!! Pass..”

“Just come back to the office after a superb lunch. 12 of us were served food at the same time (no waiting) of excellent quality/freshly cooked. Attentive, 1st class service. Can't fault! Highly recommended.”

“We had to endure a day's worth of rounders on Barn Elms pitches (firm's charity fundraiser ), we were then herded off to the nearest pub, which, in this case, was the Red Lion. It turned a very long and hard day into a most pleasurable experience, a BBQ was laid on for us and we relaxed in the summer rain underneath a heated -NON SMOKING! , patio canopy. very nice. The Red Lion resembles a gastro pub upon first impressions but when you spend some time there you realise that it is not another wanabee gastro all, it is infact a lovely well kept pub, with excellent staff, surroundings & food. We will definatly add it onto our list of places to frequent for the future. All that running around today paid off after all !!”

“The Sunday roast chicken for 2 is expensive but great. I wouldnt call this a 'gastro' pub though especially when compared to the way better food down the road at The Bridge. The bar staff are absolutely woeful, not friendly, not fast, certainly not what Ive come to expect from typical Brit Bar Keeps. (Ive been here 5 times). But the bar staff outside at the BBQ are great. Overall If you want great gastro food and great bar staff go to The Bridge, although the Red Lion Garden / BBQ area is superior to the outside area at The Bridge. If you want a 'propa' local with stunning, simple (albeit Thai) food and a great barman go across Hammersmith Bridge to the Old City Arms - no outside area but it feels 'real'. The Sun is nice but food is awful.”

“I went for an Saturday afternoon drink here at the weekend, and my friends and I enjoyed the place so much we ate dinner there and stayed until closing time. The range of beers was varied, and the service was excellent. We ordered our food and the quality was superb and deserved its price tag. There wasn't table service which was a pity, but we will definitely be back and hope to make going there a regular thing. Well done Red Lion!”

“What a delightful pub, clean & well run. I have lived in Barnes for 12 years & I thought it was still the troublesome den that it used to be. How wrong I was. When one of the girls from my antenatal class suggested it for lunch, I almost choked with disbilief, she assured me it would be good and she was right, excellent lunch, (I had the crab), pity it doesn't seem to be as good as a secret as I now wish it was!, but at least there were no chavs around!”

“On a sunny, warm day... a great place to come and sip a pint. Nice beer garden in the back, and three to four times every summer, they serve up a roast pork- grilled on a spit. A superb meal, served by a friendly staff. Families enjoy this location. Ale is the usual... Youngs, Staropramen, Guinness, etc... ”

“I had lunch here about 2 months ago, it was a terribly rainy day and we were so happy to walk into this little haven. There we five of us and the food was all devoured, some loved theirs, others thought theres were good. I had the chicken pie- delicious- just the thing you feel like eating on a cold day. The atmosphere was ok- we were there at lunch- it felt a bit empty- but i can see it being rather nice in the evening.”

“The Red Lion has undergone a change of management in January of this year,The new managers have lowered the "pretentious" prices, reintroduced a television, live music and made the food more of the old pub favourites. However all food is prepared on site and not "bought in",Sunday roasts are increasingly popular with the community at £9.55 for rare Rib of Beef.BBQ s are also very popular and not tacky.Worth a visit.”
