The Idle Hour Review

Imagine our surprise when, for some unknown reason, we diverted from our usual route of two years between Mortlake and Barnes and came upon what is probably the best kept secret in the area - the Idle Hour.

This pub is so tucked away and covert that unless someone told you in elaborate detail how to reach it - and for that matter that it existed at all - you'd never be able to benefit from it's organic gastro 'pub' food and exotic/obscure drinks collected from around the world. We hope that by publishing the Idle Hour's review on Fluid Foundation and encouraging all to visit; we don't somehow detract from the charm of this small, cosy bar.

Situated halfway down a dark alley, the Idle Hour contains a reasonable number of wooden tables (each decorated with fresh herbs), one couch and a good size bar. Formerly called the Manor Arms and having a somewhat dubious reputation the renamed and reinvented Idle Hour is another classic example of how bars further and further away from central London are improving, if not leading the way in improving the British drinking scene.

Stephen Thorpe, owner/designer/chef/barman/permanent patron, along with the other Idle Hour staff provide a warm welcome to all visiting this bar. The food is all organic, but a far cry from the usual 'tree hugging / save the whales' so called 'healthy' offerings. Of particular note is the Sunday roast that has people coming back for more and more. Diners arriving on Sundays can carve their whole chickens or legs of lamb at the table and serve up as if they were at home. The beauties here being you’re not left with the washing up.

Keeping the healthy vibe going is an extensive selection of organic wines sitting alongside the usual beers and lagers plus a selection of spirits collected from all over the globe (these vary from the tasty to the downright dangerous).

Only two minutes walk from Barnes pond and Barnes Bridge railway station the Idle Hour is definitely one of the best bars in this western part of London. Well worth travelling a distance to visit. Tell Stephen that Fluid Foundation said 'Hi'.

“Went here for Sunday lunch. Brilliant. Roast dinner (lamb and chicken which you carve yourself) served in one big dish with vegetables. Cooked just right. Gravy to die for! Service very good and being a country bumpkin I didn't think the prices were over the top for London.”

“Perfect pub.... Relaxed and atmospheric - You forget time and all stresses when you go there (Nice touch with all of the clocks running at different times so you really loose yourself and stop worryinging about what time it is!) People are lovely and so friendly - everyone talks to each other and it is just a really brilliant place... Not many pubs like this left - Go there immediately... Go for the delicious food Go for the drink Go for the atmosphere Go for the relaxed interior... Just be careful because you may never want to leave...”

“Pretty sure he''s Trinidadian, not South African, and we''ve never felt anything other than welcomed in The Idle Hour, which is our unofficial front room while we do up our house... It''s our favourite place in Barnes”

“Someplaces build a 'reputation' whilst others semm to be just granted them by muppets who think they know a good pub. And here we get to the crux of my problem with this place. It seems to have gone to his head - Such is the arrogance -probably something to do with being South African - of 'Simon' who likes to let you know that the pub is his (read the menu and count how many times the word me is used and you'll understand what I'm talking about). A pub is owned by the people who frequent it hence PUBLIC HOUSE. This indignance towards its patrons manfests itself at the bar where one can be stood at the bar for what seems a lifetime without even getting eye contact from the barman who always seems pre-occupied with something other than SERVING you. With the price you are charged for food you would have thought Simon could stretch to paying for another barman or maybe even getting out of his tiny kitchen to serve a few people himself - by the way where was that Gravy that takes you a week to make? In summary - Rudeness ruins the otherwise brilliant atmosphere but the food isn't as good as it's made out to be”

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
