White Hart Review
White Hart is featured in these Guides:
Top 10 things we learnt about The White Hart pub:
1) If you’re a sucker for a good river view, this pub is for you. It’s incredible. 270° views onto the Thames make for an amazing setting, day or night, rain or snow. If you’re really lucky, it’s worth the trip just for the glorious Oxford-Cambridge boat race day.
2) It’s in Barnes. Where’s that? Don’t be afraid, Londoner. It’s South of the River (gasp!) just a few minutes on the Overground from Clapham Junction.
3) The White Hart has two personalities; a friendly, bustling pub downstairs (The Canon Bar) allows locals to enjoy a pint or three after a hard day at work, whilst the upstairs restaurant area, The Terrace Kitchen, caters for a more sophisticated dining crowd with prices to match.
4) Quirky details make The White Hart feel that little bit more special than an ordinary pub; think hundreds of old walking sticks hanging from walls of the spiral staircase, or an audiotape of Pixar’s Brave playing in the toilet (don’t ask how I knew that).
5) The White Hart has recently been refurbished and reopened in October 2013 with Martin Wright at the helm.
6) It’s hard to get a pub refurb right without overdoing it, but hats, or should I say walking sticks, off to the restaurant’s interior designer.
7) High ceilings, full height French windows on all sides, discreet taupe greens and greys and a smattering of wicker chairs give a comfortable, conservatory feel. I was a particular fan of the sheer amount of space between all the tables, a rarity in London where space is at a premium.
8) It has its own in-house smokery. No surprise then that the heady smoked egg French toast, served with mushrooms and duck hearts, makes for a stellar starter.
9) Go for the sharing steaks as a main. They come recommended as a particular house speciality and may fare better than some of the other mains which didn’t quite live up to expectations. Proof that advise is best heeded to.
10) If you have a sweet tooth, however, this may be one of the best restaurants in London to satisfy your craving; big portions, plenty of different options and beautifully presented. Regardless of what you order, you should ask for some of the delightfully confusing sweet, gingery and yet salty honeycomb. ...read more

“Visited last weekend, after having visited 12 months ago. the difference was really noticeable. There was a guy Adam, manager? Who was really great, he appeared to have had a really good effect on the rest of the staff, who quite honestly 12 months ago were crap... If Youngs now get their finger out and spend some money on redecoration etc., this could be a fabulous pub with the improved staff...”

“This is a great pub: great old building, nice good solid beer and decent food (bit expensive). Inside it is a good old fashioned boozer, perfect for a quiet(ish) pint, and outside in the summer you couldn't be in a sweeter spot with amazing views of the river and peaceful surrounding. Sweet.”

“Great Beer and Wine, Excellent Riverside Location, Interesting old building,.....unfortunately many of the young staff are among the rudest and most unwelcoming I have met in London.”

“A beautiful pub on the river with panoramic views from its large veranda. Well kept cellar and a great choice of wines available. Youngs is a popular brew in this area so a dedicated local contingent. I visited the pub on a Rugby match day so it had a great atmosphere with its “big boys” large plasma screen. Some pretentious locals but then again it is Barnes. I didnt check out the food so I can’t comment. One sad observation, the Landlord was a little Mussolini with the staff, maybe it wasnt a good day for him, he never smiled once. He had an expression like a bull dog who had swallowed a wasp. He reminded me of Les Dawson without the laughs.”

“Yep this is a great bar. Loads of seating, a nice crowd, great new menu and of course fantastic reviews over the river. My only complaint would be the attitude of the staff at chucking out time - it is rather unpleasant having someone screaming at you from 11.01 to finish up and get out.”

“great youngs beer - the special is particularly nice! also a fantastic wine list (red and white). great pub for guys hanging out drinking proper beer and having a chat, but also one for spot of entertaining outside of the west end in a realtively nice traditional pub. only downside is i've never been impressed by the food.”
