The Bull's Head Review

Book a table at The Bull's Head

Top 10 things we discovered about The Bull’s Head pub & restaurant:

1) In South West London there's an area called Barnes that with its cobbled pathways, waterfront views and overwhelmingly WASP-y demographic feels for all the world like a part of the Home Counties rather than the bustling metropolis that is our great city.

2) Pubs with stonking great windows and sparkling river views are fab on sunny days. Pubs with book-lined nooks by the fireplace are luvverly on chilly nights. A pub with both is a special thing.

3) This pub is part of Geronimo Inns, a chain that's proud of not being a chain (its a 'pub group'). They pride themselves on each pub having its own individual style. This one, which also houses a jazz venue, treads a fine line between trendy and cosy.

4) British rose veal is a wonderful thing, but needs a heavy hand with the seasoning. No chef, a bit more than that, yes keep going, go on, don't be shy.

5) Fake animal heads on walls (here they're papier mâché, but furry ones are also available) are a thing now, apparently.

6) It's a crime that flat iron steak isn't more commonly available. Think sirloin with a hint of offal depth. Chef will cook it the way he thinks it should be (rare), thank you very much.

7) Don't bother looking at the wine list, just ask deputy manager Dave what you should be drinking. Anyone who can match a white wine with both steak and crab deserves some sort of award.

8) Any dining room that comfortably accommodates young couples on dates, octogenarians dining alone, rowdy 50-somethings' girls' nights out and mums with tots, all at once, is somewhere that has successfully engineered the 'something for everything' minefield of publicanship.

9) And whilst we're at it, any pub that gives the loos this much space and light is somewhere that cares about its customers' comfort. No really, you could hold a party in them there facilities. Smashing.

10) Puds here are both rich and generous. Share one. Then, if you've still got space (you won't), get the all-British cheeseboard. And a port (on Dave's recommendation, of course).

“Wow what a great pub! This has now had a complete refurbishment and been taken over by new management. This has to be one of the best dining pubs I've been to in a long time :) service was amazing and the jazz was cool, even tho I'm not into that style of music it just had such a cool vibe, glad I tried it out and will be taking more friends and family back soon !”

“A great pub with stacks of atmosphere at a superb riverside location. Hosting world class jazz since the sixties. 8 times a week, every week. Good choice of food including Thai and of course excellent Youngs Beer. Bar staff friendly and workmanlike, particularly in the Jazz room. If you are a Jazz fan don't miss the Bull's Head. Easy parking after 6pm.”

“Appalling staff- ignorant and unfriendly and avoid all eye contact in case it means having to serve someone. Thank god for the staff from the next door Thai restaurant who bring some charm and efficiency (and great food) into an otherwise charm-free zone. ”

“I can only comment on the Thai restaurant which we discovered by accident and is excellent. The poor staff get a bit overburdened at times esp on busy Friday but are always polite. The food is excellent and cheap and you won't be disappointed. It has a nice cosy atmosphere too so is great for a private meal.”

“I completely disagree with the other user who thought the service at the Bull's Head was unfriendly. My husband and I have been for dinner twice and found them extremely helpful and friendly. On one occasion we made a mistake and ordered the wrong meal. It was our fault, but they replaced it with the meal that we really wanted free of charge. Most of the dishes are gorgeous and good value. Loved the spicy vermicelli salad with chicken & prawns and the squid stuffed with vermicelli; the prawns in a garlic and pepper sauce were really fresh and flavoursome. Some of the meals are a little salty though or have too many flavours at once.”

“I have to say that this bar - along with the licensee is the worst place I have ever been in. He is so ignorant and rude to customers - I thought I was the only one - it is a disgrace that this is allowed to continue. ”

“Amazing wines, great pints, tradional central bar, river views, unbeaten Thai food, efficient staff, live music - the list goes on. Living as I do in the Barnes area I am surprised how seldom I find myself in the Bulls Head - I will address this.”
