The Devonshire Review

The Devonshire is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things you need to know about The Devonshire:

1) Live in South London? Then you should already be well acquainted with Balham, where The Devonshire can be found. It’s Clapham’s more inconveniently located twin, Wimbledon’s naughty little bit on the side. To North Londoners, it might as well be darkest Peru.

2) Its location means this is a residents’ pub, rather than “quick pint before the train” venue, so nab a table early, and don’t be fooled by the quiet. Once the locals start arriving, it fills up fast.

3) Buying a round? Best ask what’s actually on draft before anyone sets their hearts on one of the many real ales on offer. There’s theoretically lots of choice but when it’s gone, it’s gone.

4) Go with a gang of mates on a Tuesday for the pub quiz. Doesn’t even have to be a big gang - the broad range of skills and topics covered mean two can compete just as easily as six.

5) That thing we mentioned about skills? It’s not just scribbling answers at this quiz. Sculpting vegetables from tinfoil is popular too. Make something odd, like a pumpkin; everyone else will do carrots, guaranteed.

6) Their chicken butter is a must-try. That’s salty butter infused with crispy chicken skin, slathered on thick crusty bread. Insanely good.

7) Portion sizes are erratic - if you’re not sure if you need to order sides (you probably will), just ask.

8) If ever there was a pub that can appeal to everyone, it’s this one. There’s dark cosy nooks for private conversations, a spacious beer garden for sun lovers, sprawling benches for parties, and high stools at cocktail tables for poseurs, and yet somehow it all works together.

9) Give the manager a medal, they’ve realised it’s a pub not a nightclub. That means you can still read your menu without a torch after 7pm, and you don’t have to resort to sign language to have a conversation late at night.

10) Don’t go with someone you don’t know well or need to impress with fancy food, go with pals for a chinwag and take a punt on something more interesting than ribeye and chips. They’re trying hard to be more than just a steak, pie and burger pub, they really are. But if you must be boring, they do fish and chips.

“Don't get the pork belly. It's rubbish! Wobbly and undercooked. Whereas the spinach is over cooked. Plus, they need to update their board games. Shame, nice pub, good service, comfy seating, awesome beer garden, chilled out atmos; shame the food doesn't live up to expectations.”

“Two reasons I love this pub: the massive beer garden out the back (deceptively narrow this pub); and the fine selection of ales on tap. Yeh, even girls can like ales you know! I also like how the interior is quite plush. Nice one Young's for bringing South West London yet another stylish pub that locals like myself actually want to hang out in.”

“This is a great pub to have as a local. Suitable for a mid week drink, Sunday lunch or Friday/Saturday night. Has a nice mix of Claphamites and locals, serves pub food and has fun atmosphere. Ideal place to meet with your mates on Saturday afternoon and to stay there til the early hours! P.S. dont bother trying to get in after 10pm on the weekend.”
