The Seagrass Description

Squatter Restaurant Occupies Islington.

This summer will see the launch of The Seagrass, a part time restaurant located in Chapel Market, one of London’s most established food markets. Pie and mash shop by day, this hidden Victorian gem transforms into a gastronomic delight by night, serving the finest game, seafood and other seasonal produce.

A self-styled ‘squatter’ restaurant open in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday, The Seagrass is housed in a unique nineteenth century building that has a preservation order on the authentic décor. As guests enter the venue they experience a real

taste of an old cockney London which has almost disappeared. All the original features remain, with mosaic floor, tiled walls, and dark wooden pews. Mirrors line the walls and low lighting and candles create a warm and intimate atmosphere, perfect for dining with friends.

The restaurant has aseasonal menu that changes every week and specialises in fresh seafood sourced from the surrounding suppliers in Chapel Market and game from The Wild GameCompany. Dishes such as Pan Fried Squid in Chilli Butter with Rocket, Chorizo and Pine Nuts, Wild Highland Pigeon Breast with Leek, Mushroom and Parmesan Risotto, Lobster Thermidor and Venison Haunch Fillet with Triple Cooked Chips and a Redcurrant and Port Jus feature on the reasonably priced £30 for three courses menu, which is accompanied with a Bring Your Own Bottle policy.

The Seagrass is the brainchild of four dedicated foodies. Ruaridh Emslie (also of The Wild GameCompany, The Bonnie & Wild) Dan Boxall, Isabel Widowson and Head Chef Ian Sims (ex-Mussel Inn, Edinburgh) have pooled their experience and passion toproduce this unique project. The rest of the time The Seagrass team can be found selling street food at a variety of food markets in London, including Broadway and Whitecross Street Markets,

The Seagrass is one squatter restaurant that will be staying put.
