The North Pole Review

Best for: Sunday roasts, retro games and as a distraction from popular TV shows.

Great: selection of real ales and craft beers on the borders between Islington and Hackney.

I bet I'm not the only one who takes Sunday as the least favourite day of the week. I'm not sure is it due to a headache from the day before or a headache just from thinking of the week ahead. That is why I've never really understood or agreed with the lyrics by The Cure :"It’s Friday I'm in love, Saturday wait. And Sunday always comes too late". I always felt Sunday always comes too early. However I found myself looking forward to Sunday evening more recently, just to watch my favourite television show, Downton Abbey. I started watching it only because of Dame Maggie Smith and I've been hook on it from the very first episode.

There must be a very enticing reason, therefore, to get me off the living room couch on a Sunday night. When I got the assignment to visit The North Pole on a cold freezing autumnal evening, it was worrying.

Ironically dressed like Roald Amundsen, the great polar explorer, we braved the dark corners of Hackney on a freezing Sunday night to venture towards The North Pole. I have to be honest, The North Pole pub is on a nondescript residential road and it doesn’t look particular inviting. However, once inside, the place began to grow on me. There’s dark wood panelling and retro accents here and there. The pub is split into three different levels.

The lower ground floor is the games room with a vast array of antique games: slot machines that are only 20p a go and still have a lever pull, and space invaders that are a reminder of the Atari days.

I headed for the bar first to satisfy my Sunday thirst. This pub is first and foremost about craft beer and real ale. The selection is extensive. My guest not being a beer drinker, I opted for the more socially inclusive bottle of chardonnay to share. If, at the real North Pole, they had such a great selection of wine and beer, it might be difficult to leave.

“The drunken mind will speak a sober heart" yelled the message from the wall. Well, at least you know this review will be 100% truthful.

The North Pole definitely looked the part with the howling wind and rain thrashing the terrace. We intelligently picked a seat close to the open kitchen, not just for warmth but also to check out the food coming out. The smell of Sunday roast was most inviting. I opted for a roast chicken. The portion size was more Thanksgiving Day turkey than a rationed portion of spatchcock on Roald Amundsen’s vessel. There was absolutely no room for a starter for me.

"Beer is a proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" was another quote that caught my attention on the walls. I thought surely this applies to a Sunday roast too.

My guest opted for a pint of prawns - and yes it did come in a pint glass freshly in its shell - and a sturdy choice of beef burger.

The North Pole has a jovial atmosphere, I happily chatted away to strangers having a cigarette on the terrace and also by the bar with the lovely bar lady, Michelle, and even the head chef popped out to chat with me.

We left the pub thinking if the North Pole is really like this, then maybe just maybe we might book to go there for a holiday next time rather than that a sunny, idyllic beach holiday in the Caribbean.

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
