The Mucky Pup Review

The Mucky Pup is featured in these Guides:

Just a short way down Essex Rd is a sign advertising "The Mucky Pup - this way". Following it's direction, we're led through an archway, down [what seems to be] a residential back street, past children playing football on the road, before coming across The Mucky Pup.

Named after what used to be the resident puppy (that can surely only now be known as the resident small horse), The Mucky Pup is effectively a local pub which seems to be going out of it's way to make it into the bar culture of Angel. With a central drinking area with tables, couches to lounge in, adverts for a quiz night on Wednesday, a pool table in a smoky room, and an enclosed-in-large-brick-wall beer garden, this pub is the antitheses of All Bar One.

The main area of the venue is quite small, and seems a little crowded before there is anyone in there. After a couple of pints, though, it seems more like drinking in a mates' lounge - quite a warm feeling. On the night we were there, the music was up-beat, and rock-tastic - belting out everything from the a Counting Crows classic to the new Scissor Sisters tune. Probably not to everyone's taste, but a very welcome change from listening to JT or Britney down at the local Yates'. One thing definitely to it's credit - they've got the volume right - loud enough to enjoy the music but still quite acceptable for conversation.

What stuck out most of all about this venue, however, was the staff. Having never stepped foot in The Mucky Pup before, they were friendly. Almost un-London type friendly. After the initial shock, it was really nice, and they went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and important - back to that drinking in your mates' lounge again. Newcomers were all dealt a hearty welcome, and this really added to the atmosphere.

After saying all this, I wouldn't tell you to journey from South London just for a bit of Mucky Pup atmosphere. I found it was a nice place to go for a few drinks. I don't think it's part of the reason people come to Angel, though if you're in the neighbourhood - or even just out of - it's worth popping your head in to form an opinion. Oh, they do food, too - though I wasn't overly inspired by the menu (hey - it's bar food) the Sunday Roast was highly recommended by the bar staff.

A final note - on our visit, it was pretty quiet - I can't imagine what would happen if said mucky pup/horse was released into the venue during rush hour.

I'm very interested to see what other people think of the place - they're certainly making an effort. I'll go back again. more

“Beware! After reading all these great reviews I was really looking forward to checking out this pub that sounded unique, cosy and full of character. I took my friends there on a sunny Sunday afternoon ready to relax in one of Londons 'top beer gardens' and just had to laugh at how wrong you can get it! Do people mean dog friendly as in it just Reeks of dogs!? Although there wasn't a dog (or person for that matter) in sight... By the way my family have always had dogs but it doesn't mean the house always stinks. The 'garden' is small, concrete, closed in, contains 2 stools, and basically feels like a prison! The staff were fine, far from super friendly but that doesn't bother me too much if there's a good atmosphere. There wasn't, it was dead. I live in the East End and have seen my fair share of shabby pubs and this one definately comes under the 'alternative' (smelly!) type. Putting it in a 'top beer garden' list is a complete and utter JOKE! If you're looking for a decent outdoor space try Duke of Edinboro in Camden or The Eagle in Shoreditch.”

“I agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments - a pub which manages to be cool without trying too hard. Sadly this is becoming increasingly uncommon in Islington. Good music, good food, a fun quiz night AND a pool table to boot! Let's hope that they remain chilled out as the popularity of the Mucky Pup grows.”

“Just to let you know that we have won a national award for the most dog-friendly pub in the UK! Although, we look after both two and four-legged customers equally well!”

“Stumbled across the pub by accident today and was very glad that I did. The food was excellent, well priced and the tea with yummy vanilla and choccie crisp-twists were a nice touch - even if one of them did go to the dog!! Had a great time chatting to the owners who are willing to chat and get to know you which is something you don't get much in London these days. Music and tv were good too not that there was any need to watch the telly! Will definatley recommend it to my mates - shame I can't go back for a while as I am moving!! Wish I had found the place a few months ago! Hopefully soon they will be a book crossing venue too - which will be wicked! Keep it up guys! It's a great place! ”

“Iggy the dog, (you can't miss him), sets the tone of this place; eat, drink, play or just chill in one of the many cosy corners. The owners are welcoming to all and very accomodating-- they seem to really love what they do. I recommend the Salmon and Noodles, and the Sunday Roast is big and yummy, as well. Unlike most of N1, the Mucky Pup is a very cool place without trying.”

“Rose - being "nothing fancy" is kind of the point. If it's fancy you want this is not the place.”

“The Mucky Pup is a really excellent pub. Really nicely laid out with the most comfortable sofas I've ever had the pleasure of sitting on. The owners are really friendly and you always get a very warm welcome there. They also have a very cool dog called Iggy! Highly reccomended if you want to get away from the trendy bars or chain pubs that Islington has in abundance!”

“its nothing fancy, the service was slow and the dogs continually sniffing around you gets annoying after awhile.”

“The Mucky Pup is a pub offering an excellent alternative to the scrum of Essex Road. Laid back, very comfortable, very trendy. ”

“An outstanding addition to the N1 pub scene. Very laid back with splendid friendly service, fun decor and good beer. A great option if tired of the crowds and general mayhem of Essex Road at the weekend. Pool table and well stocked juke box too.”
