The Duke of Cambridge Review

The Duke of Cambridge is featured in these Guides:

With a name like "The Duke of Cambridge", you'd expect a dodgy, dark bar, with elderly gentlemen sipping away at a pint of Ale, glaring at newcomers and talking about "the good old days" or the decline of youth.

Not so at all. The Duke of Cambridge was re-opened a few years ago as an Organic Pub. They proudly tout themselves as "The World's first Certified Organic Pub". Basically, this means no GM food, no chemical fertilisers - they even have a policy on the fish they buy. They brew their own range of draft Organic lager and ale, all with no additives or nastiness - and it has to be said, it's not too bad! All the wine is certified organic, which is nice - often equating to less of a hangover the next morning.

To some of us, that means doing our part for the environment, and being good to our bodies. To others, they sound like a bunch of new-age hippies. No matter what you think, however, you can't help but like the place. The colour scheme is light and airy, with plenty of windows - giving the place a nice open feeling. The tables and chairs are all recycled - all a bit rickety, and add wonderfully to the overall atmosphere of homeliness. This is not a place to stand on ceremony - make yourself comfortable! There is a restaurant and private room down the back, and a small beer garden for the summer.

The food there is fantastic. There is no other way to say it. The menu changes every day, and dishes are prepared on site. Watching them marking off on the blackboard the servings of the fish of the day is a great motivator to getting you up there for a plate. The menus are inventive, and the dishes are cooked to perfection. The variety of food is so varied, you are guaranteed to find something you like. Wash it all down with a nice bottle of wine or three, and you're well on your way to a memorable night.

Do bear in mind, this experience doesn't come cheap. After being featured in a number of "Where to eat..." magazines, the prices have crept up and up - an evening of two meals and a couple of bottles of wine won't leave you much change from £80, if any at all. But hey - you can't have it all, I guess! more

“Smug. Bland. And ridiculous. I went here for a friend's birthday on Friday and one of our party had baked a special birthday cake. But when they tried to bring it into the pub, they were barred. The reason was that as an organic pub, no non-organic food could be consumed on the premises (due to their organic certification). We countered that saying the cake hadn't been made in the pub kitchens, hadn't been sold by the pub and that their kitchen was closed anyway. But no. We then asked if we could at least cut the cake and sing happy birthday inside. But again no, non-organic food could not be cut or sung over on the premises. In the end, we had to go outside and serve the cake in the freezing cold and rain. Nice. Otherwise, the service was surly, the food overpriced, the atmosphere ordinary and the cider terrible. If you want a good pub that serves organic ales, go to the Charles Lamb down the road.”

“My experience at The Duke of Cambridge, Islington, London. We ate at Duke of Cambridge on November 16th , 2007 at 22:26. and had a bad experience. The place wasn't clean, l saw a big dirty dog in the pub. Im not satisfied with the service. The food wasn’t nice and wasn’t cooked properly plus the price so high l paid over 200 pounds for a bad service (I kept the bill). But the worst was that every table was dirty, sticky which made my dress dirty. I have never been so disgusted. I will not do business at this Duke of Cambridge, will advice all my friends and tell them stories about the bad experience I had.”

“Nice space shame about the inhabitants. 20mins to see the menu, 50 mins to get the food, 20 mins to pay the bill. There were only five customers in the place and they were more interested in doing the cleaning than serving. Probably the rudest service I have encountered for a long time. Otherwise, the cider is good but the food lacked any special qualities. As a result I cannot recommend anyone making an effort to get there - good if you are local, starving and thick skinned. “The unsmiling Australian barmaid was very rude. The atmosphere was very tense, the cost of our drinks and food was poor quality and cold. The food took a long time to arrive and when I passed the kitchen to use the toilets, I noticed some chefs messing around. This place will not see my hard earned money again.”

“Most people are right should be a great place but is sadly lacking. They don''t brew their own beer either as some people think, this is done by The Great PITFIELD Brewery which is not a million miles away. Why do the staff NOT smile. Maybe they pay to work there just for the experience. If this is how the other half live I''ll give it a miss and stay round the corner at The Wenlock.”

“I live right around the corner from the Duke of Cambridge and haved dined their quite alot. The food is always excellent with new and different things showing up on the blackboard/menu and it has a great casual atomosphere. The only knocks that I have on it are that the organic beer is just mediocre - but still very drinkable and that a few of the bartenders dont know about service with a smile. Those minor points aside, it is a great place to meet up with friends for great food in a relaxed atomosphere.”

“Some of the things I have read through from the above reviews do seem to "ring bells". However I am a local to this pub - living more or less above it! I use it frequently and find it quite a welcoming atmosphere tha majority of the time! The staff, although quite brisk in their approach to customers, are extremely nice, and will try and find you any alternatives where possible, even things that are not on the menu can be done. My only real complaint is that if you either cannot drink alcohol or are unable to then there is no "standard" choice - all the non-alcoholic drinks are *very* pricey (a pint of organic coke is 4 pounds - eh... four quid for a pint of coke is absolutly outrageous!). Overall this pub is fine -- but note my choice of wording - this is a pub not a resturant - beware of dodgy reviews from customers who seem to think this venue is somthing it is not!”

“I went in here and there was this tosser at the bar who asked for a mineral water. When offered ice he asked if it was made from mieral water. It wasn't so he said he wouldn't bother.Sums up the place perfectly. Dull dull food. Just because it's organic doesn't mean it isn't dull. Good ingredients but no talent in the kitchen. Really dull clientele. Shaved heads, black glasses. cry themselves to sleep at night because it's all an act - you know the type. ”

“Went for the 'Third best Sunday lunch in town' and I was totally disappointed. The staff were miserable and rude and the food was pretty dire too. There was only one traditional Sunday lunch, chicken, which in my and my partners opinion was tough and tasteless and at £15 a plate wasn't a decent price either. All in all we felt we wouldn't revisit...”

“The spiciest ginger beer in London! Great drinks, good food but very pricey and the bar staff are not exactly 'happiness and light'... Go with a group of mates for the best experience.”

“This place is now terrible. Nice room, but declining food standards and rip off prices. By far the worst thing about the place is the arrongance served by the staff. I've experienced service that is downright rude. Avoid - there are much better places nearby such as The Easton and the Elk in the Woods.”

“What this site refers to as "old man's pubs" are in fact much better in every respect that the vast majority of the dull, standardised, slightly desperate, "youth oriented" bars now so prevelant in Central London. Discuss.”

“This is a great pub, the organic beer is lovely stuff. The only improvement would be to make some of the staff a bit more friendly.”
