The Draper's Arms Review

After an evening of wining and dining at the Draper’s Arms, my pal and I were left in shock. Charming proprietor and excellent host, Mark Emberton provided such an indulgent feast, we walked away from his award-winning Islington pub like two ladies in the throes of five month pregnancies.

In a beautifully quaint residential neighbourhood between Caledonian Road and Angel lies The Draper’s Arms, a classy Islington refurb which opened after a four-year hiatus in 2001.

When Emberton, a seasoned chef whose CV boasts such revered establishments as Quaglino’s, approached the stunning Georgian building it was in such a state that its current styling is astounding. He claims however, they didn’t do much but throw down a bit of paint and toss in some shabby-chic furniture from Camden Stables.

Sitting on the vibrant garden patio, we began with a bottle of O’Leary Walker Riesling, a vintage bursting with freshness which complemented an array of delicious starters served proudly by the helpful and courteous staff.

Our salad of butternut squash, runner beans and goat’s cheese competed with fat parmesan-flanked asparagus shears for the appetizer of choice. While munching away, Emberton entertained us with legends of London’s historic restaurateurs and tales of his experiences working in some of the capital’s most renowned kitchens.

As the mains arrived, along with another bottle of Riesling, we were amazed by the sheer quality of the food. If mediocrity ever resided in this establishment, you’d have a hard time finding its traces.

We opted for pub prerequisite fish and chips – done with a Japanese breadcrumb rather than batter, which allowed the fish’s delicate flavour to come through. Grilled scallops were delivered in Montpellier butter – a decadent mélange of fresh herbs, garlic, anchovies, shallots, Pastis and some more of those breadcrumbs providing a crispy and flavoursome delight.

As if we needed anything else, Mark insisted we sample the dessert list and more specifically the Raspberry Eton Mess – a singing dab of soft Italian meringue and crème Chantilly drizzled with a tart raspberry compote and the Cointreau chocolate pot, which is exactly what it says – a boozy fusion of rich warm chocolate and the orange liqueur.

After our feast, Emberton directs us to the second floor dining area – a casual, yet elegant room with hard wood flooring and windows looking over a quiet tree-lined street. The room is available for hiring and styled with care. But the décor merely provides a backdrop for what will be - should you decide to drop in - a delightful culinary experience.

“Well what can one say, it certainly lives up to a stated standard of best public house (especialy the food). The Drapers Arms was a very nice suprise with a pleasant atmosphere, decent menu and a good beer. Will be going again next time I'm in london.”

“Excellent food (especially upstairs in the restaurant). Good beers and wines, but the decor and atmosphere is a bit on the bland side for my taste; a good place to entertain the parents.”
