The Canonbury Description

This historic Islington pub has been refurbished and reopened in time to welcome the summer hoards that will no doubt continue to flock to its famous beer garden (one of the best on London). The interior, food and drink remain fairly standard for an upmarket gastropub. However, though a patchwork of astroturf, box hedging and paving now gives it a slightly artificial feel, the garden remains the main draw - still one of the capital’s most pleasant areas in which to while away the long summer evenings.

“I am in my 60's and remember drinking in the Canonbury in the 1960's. In those days many 'celebrities', including Ted Ray ('Ray's A Laugh' radio show), Pete Murray (radio D.J.) and actors Tom Courtenay and Arthur Mullard, were frequently to be seen there. Last week I met up with 6 friends from those days (4 of us attended Highbury grammar school (as it was then) together) and we were delighted to see the Canonbury had re-opened. We were supposed to be dining at a restaurant in Upper Street but they had closed without informing us. The Canonbury was able to accomodate us and what could have been a disaster turned into a great evening with excellent food and efficient friendly staff. We regularly meet up in Highbury and will certainly make the Canonbury a regular again.”

“Me and 4 friends visited The Canonbury last sunday as we walked past and saw it was packed, thought we must have stumbled across a good thing! Even though the whole place was full we were greeted by the friendly staff as soon as we entered and were informed how long our table would be, which turned out to be only 15 mins... just enough time for one of their lovely spicy bloody marys'! Our meal was fantastic, loads of veg and tender meat but the best bit wqas definitely the gravy... I want the recipe! all in all we had a great afternoon and will certainly be back, I would recomend anyone in the area try it as it is in my opinion a very unique venue.”

“The Canonbury is a total disappointment. Despite its huge potential and "presentable" appearance, you quickly realise that currently it has few selling points. The staff behind the bar lacked any sort of personal skills and were unresponsive and rude. They looked like they were not properly trained and took an age to do anything. The drinks prices are ridiculously expensive, with 2 beers coming to almost 8 quid, and the menu is typically poor value given the standard of food that is delivered. The seating in the garden is incredibly uncomfortable, with it presumably installed by a designer for its appearance, rather than for the actual experience and comfort it should provide the paying customers. My visit was awful.”

“The Canonbury Tavern is re-opening on 11 August. Finally! Bring on the sunshine so we can enjoy the great looking garden.”

“THE CANONBURY IS RE-OPENING AT LAST!!! Hopefully it will be open by the 3rd week in July. I've seen the inside and it's absolutely gorgeous - smart but not pretentious and the food is going to be affordable but good. I hear some of the residents are doing all they can to try and prevent it opening but they forget that it's been a Tavern since time began and ironically it's their houses that ruined the Tavern's garden and not the other way around!!! If they don't want the noise of people enjoying themselves on a sunny afternoon they shouldn't have bought adjacent to a pub in the first place!!! It's looked so sad for so long and we should all say a big thank you to the chap that's taken it over for investing so much time, money and effort in restoring it to it's former glory. See you at The Canonbury real soon!!!!”

“I've lived in Islington all my life and I remeber the Canonbury Tavern in the 70's when I was a kid. They used to have a swing in the garden and coloured lights around the place it was really magical, I remember drinking cola from a bottle with a paper straw. It's sad that the place has shutdown, I think it's mainly to do with the residents, the posh lot who don't want children making a noise. So now we have to find another pub just like this one in Islington but it's impossible as it's all wine bars and coffee shops. BRING BACK THE CANONBURY TAVERN.”

“I live near the Canonbury and it is currently undergoing renovation. It seems to be taking ages but the planning application on the lamp-post said that they were building a conservatory and it would be re-opening as a restaurant. I truly hope it will be open for this coming summer and that it will be worth the wait.”

“I'm so sad to hear the Canonbury has closed (perhaps it has re-opened since the last review of May 2007?). I lived and worked at the Canonbury between 1986-1989. It had just re-opened after being completely overhauled and had the look of a winebar. It was a struggle to get the patrons to return after it's history as a long-standing tenency but people eventually did return. It was really a wonderful place; the gardens were always jam-packed from Thursday nights to Sunday afternoons with families and young people and there was a stream of really good staff come through during my years there. I happened to be in London in the summer of 2005 and was so very sad when I went, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, only to find it almost completely deserted and the interior, dark and run-down; completely gutted once again (this time a return to a traditional pub). Times change! Upper Street is so different form the cool, bohemian place I knew so well. It's now awash with up-scale shops and fancy cafes that seem now to be the place to go on Saturday afternoons. I really hope that at some point the pub will reopen and regain it's vitality as a friendly and welcoming neighbourhood meeting place. ”

“Saturday night was the hottest night this summer, so we finally set out to visit the Canonbury Tavern's beer garden, the best in North London. How sad to find it boarded up and the garden empty and forlorn. This used to be the best place on a hot night. The Alwyne (ex Alwyne Castle) has a big outdoor drinking area but I'd hardly call it a garden, unless concrete and pot plants is your idea of a garden. And its noisy with traffic. But, it does the job. We want the Canonbury Tavern back and we want it now!!”

“I went to the Canonbury Tavern in June of last year with my partner and 11 year old daughter. Didn't feel this was a problem as they'd always let kids into the garden before, however, I was shocked to be told that children were no longer allowed in the garden. The garden was empty and my daughter, being 11, was hardly going to run around and cause a nuisence. I've grown up in Islington and my parents used to take me there as a child. It was one of the few places families could relax in the sunshine and meet friends for a drink. Could the closure of the pub be caused by barring all children from the garden thus losing a massive chunk of it's custom???”

“Closed since October 2006; still closed at the time of writing (May 2007). Shame, as it was a nice place.”

“Fantastic pub. Escaping to the beer garden in the hot weather is a great way to while away an afternoon. The 'no children' rule was also welcomed by many of my 20-something friends.”

“I would just like the Cannonbury Tavern to change the 'no childern' rule. ”

“Barabara, I have to say that what you call a "faschist view", I would call a "blessing in disguise". Don't get me wrong, I love kids and have nieces and nephews, but the pub just isn't the place for them. The Canonbury serves great food and drinks and has a lovely area out the back, great on summers days. Making this an adults playground as opposed to a kids one was a smart move, sorry Barbara!!”

“This used to be a great place but in 2005 they took a faschist view and banned children - even during the day. No comment. Needless to say we don't go there anymore. Same goes for many Islinton couples I know. Shame on you Canonbury Tavern!”
