Island Queen Review

Book a table at Island Queen

When you stumble upon the Island Queen you should sober up enough to appreciate its beauty. It was built in 1885 and is now a listed building. It has a multi-windowed Victorian frontage that allows natural light to stream inside, hitting gold pillars and high ceilings.

The interior is a miss-match of designs from different eras, mixing classic and traditional with contemporary stuff, creating a funky original style. There are old wooden tables and chairs with the odd old office swivel chair and potted plant flung in too. Comfy seats are lined with purple velvet.

Ballroom chandeliers and fairy lights line the ceiling and reflect off large mirrors. The bar is a traditional mahogany horseshoe that has been maintained since the pub opened. Sounds messy but it works.

Friday night is usually brimming with locals, coming for ‘Fish n Chips Friday’ with fresh fish supplied by the local fishmonger. There is also a general knowledge quiz on Tuesdays starting at 8pm.

The Island Queen is a popular place to hold gatherings and parties. There is an upstairs function room that holds up to 70 people.

The extensive wine list has 15 different wines and the bar also sells several Belgian beers. The Fruli strawberry beer is a deliciously refreshing drink to sip while sitting at one of the outside tables.

The food menu offers a variety of ‘Big Ones’ such as Suffolk sausages on a bed of home made mash and meat gravy at £7-ish or ‘Lights’ like olives, feta cheese and ciabatta for around £4. For desert lovers, there is a smaller menu with old favourites, like fresh cream profiteroles served in warm chocolate sauce and sticky toffee square-all for £3.50.

Hidden down a side street near Angel, Island Queen is not easy to spot. But it’s definitely worth finding. more

“Having lived in Islington for 5 years and now living in Stoke Newington I cant help but feel disappointed with myself for not venturing around the corner to one of the most stunning pubs I have been to in London in the 10 years I have been living here. Coming from Nottingham, a place well known for its historic pubs I'm used to fantastic pubs filled with history , charm and atmosphere. That was until recently when I finally went to visit The Island Queen, Noel Rd Islington. You cant help but be impressed by the magnificent Victorian windows that go as high as the enormous ceilings. The horseshoe bar seems dwarfed by the grand mirrored walls which you cant help but sit and stare at. It was a Sunday and indeed a sunny day and at first we were reluctant to sit inside a bar even though we were really relishing a Sunday lunch to nurse our hangover from the previous night. But once we entered the pub we were smitten. Serving a varied selection of Sunday Roasts, Bar snacks, a great selection of wine and not to mention the fantastic beers on offer (im hoping to try the raspberry leemans on our next visit) The bar staff were friendly and all smiles and who wouldn’t be working in such a beautifully decadent environment. Instead of s Sunday roast I opted for the fish fingers on ciabatta with lime mayo and a round glass of rioja and sat back reading the Sunday papers. The furniture all very inviting and comfortable with the added bonus of the music being subtle and understated. I could ”

“What have Mitchels & Butlers Done to this Great Pub. They have Killed A great boozer, and taking out the old gas lamps was utter stupidity. Also what is with the cheap tacky lights now. A great shame.”
