Hen & Chickens Theatre Bar Review
I really like this little pub. Complete with its own theatre upstairs this really is a great alternative if you want to do something a bit different and they even ring a bell when its time to wander upstairs, drink in hand, and watch the evening’s entertainment.
Sundays and Mondays are comedy night and the rest of the week is as varied as The Tempest to The Eggman (I’m not sure either but it does sound interesting).
The food menu is not extensive but I don’t think that matters and prices range from £3.50 to £5.50. I like a place that knows what it is, and Hen exemplifies this perfectly by sticking to what it does best; Beer. They even have a selection of European ales, which, although I did not sample, my beer - loving boyfriend assured me that this is definitely a selling point.
Friday and Saturday Hen stays open till 1.30 am and I was impressed that they serve food until close; an alternative to kebab is always appreciated! This is a great little North London pub, unpretentious and with a friendly local atmosphere, and the theatre above definitely gives it a unique edge.

“A sham of a pub. Slow service, overpriced beer, music so loud conversation is rendered impossible. Whats more, the so-called live bands only play covers. Many more better places to go just a few minutes down Upper Street.”

“I have been to the Hen and Chickens on many different occassions and have always had a good time. This is mainly down to the fact that it is one of the few Pub Theatre venues that lacks pretensions and 'poseurs'.
Each night a different act are playing in the pub area, either live bands or djs. Last time I was there, a dj and theatre collective called Wide were installed behind the decks, and everyone was boogying to the beats of their set.
The theatre always has something good on and is reasonable for London Fringe. Basically, it is a wicked venue for a first date, as if you have no conversation skills, you can at least chat about the music, the punters or the show.... Go there, don't be square!”
