Chapel Bar & Club Review

Book a table at Chapel Bar & Club

Best for: Booking events (from hen parties to music gigs) in North London.

Great: Servings of wicked whisky.

Standing on trial in the Fluid court for the heinous crime of being drunk on the job is critic Greg Hall.

Judge, jury and executioner: “Now, you odious vagabond, what were your whereabouts at approximately 10pm on Friday the 5th of November?”

Greg Hall: “My location? Well your honour, that night it was raining relentlessly. Like a drowned rat I submerged at Chapel Bar (a renovated church), near Angel tube station, Islington, with a couple of mates in tow. One was over from New Zealand; it was good to catch up.”

Judge: “Pah, spare me the sentiment. Chapel Bar eh, I doubt that you were praying there were you? Describe this ‘bar’.”

GH: “I guess you could pray if you wanted to your honour, they still have a pulpit, with the original church window frames to boot. Surprisingly it was more like a meek Monday, then Midnight Mass, although pummelling, pulsating house music was booming, the turnout was kind of dry, with a handful of trendy student types rattling around. I hasten to stress such a petite presence of people is unusual for Chapel, but I digress. To deliberate on the decor I’d say this modern monastery has an aesthetic aura; the delicately dim lighting works well with the dark leather seats and equally noire wooden furnishing. The peaceful purple and beaming burgundy walls round things off well.”

Judge: “Hmmm , that sounds absolutely dreadful. I put it to you that because of your wretched situation you chose to recklessly race down the road of inebriation.”
GH: “Well to be fair, the place was open to three in the morning. Likelihood is that it filled up later. Plus, Chapel is usually busy when I’ve been before.”

Judge: “Cease your meandering backchat. I suggest that you co-operate with my questioning.”
GH: “Well your honour, I’d say I have no case to answer.”

Judge: “Well if that is the CASE I’ll put you in the stocks immediately, you insolent guttersnipe!”

GH: “Oh okay, the drinking? Well your honour, point number one and I stress that this is a massive point. I was out with a Kiwi; so do the math, there was no way I could cling to a clear head. Your honour, it’s a common known fact that Antipodeans annihilate alcohol, and put us Brits to shame in the process. Oh, and point number two; the Peroni lager and whisky and coke chasers had serious swagger.”

Judge: “Ah, so here it is: a confession of sorts. But still I am not satisfied. Did you sacrifice sobriety as you felt you were in a bland bar?”

GH: “Well your honour, in all honesty it wasn’t the finest night I’ve had in Chapel Bar, but I’d put that down to luck amongst anything else. It is usually more vivacious and vibrant so I wasn’t put off. It was a good warm up place before we went out in Shoreditch. If you want more information your honour, I’m afraid I can’t give you any, because I got absolutely trollied!”

Judge: “I’ve heard enough of this diabolical diatribe. You have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. Defendant, how do you plead?”

GH: “I plead not guilty your honour, there’s no crime in having a good time.”

Judge: “In light of the evidence, I find you the dastardly defendant on trial for the charge of drinking on the job and ‘having a laugh with your mates’, as undoubtedly and disgustingly guilty. I hereby sentence you to scribe positive, prosaic reviews of generic mainstream coffee shops for thirty years. You have no right to appeal. Case dismissed.”

“I have been going to the chapel bar for about 5 years now, i have always loved and enjojed the roof terrace on a sunny week day afternoon, the location is just off the beaten track but provides the perfect setting for a chilled out, relaxed after work brew. . . highly recommend it to anyone.”

“Been to the chapel bar a few times, usually on a friday night. They seem to have a few different promotions on mainly focusing on the house music genre. . . usually end up being one of the last ones out of there but with a 4am finish thats good for me. Good thing about the chapel bar is that its always value for money - usually £5 b4 12am and a bit more after. Great for a late licenced bar, every where else around Angel either finishes at 2am or is over £10 for a late one. . . I reccommend it highly.”

“I came to the Chapel for the first time last thursday for the launch party of Shuffle. I was happily surprised throughout the evening... First, despite being crowded, the bar was not that smokey, the vibe was good and the staff on-the-ball. Second, the drinks were not over-priced, a good point for a venue closing at 1am. And third, at the end of the bar, there is a proper dancefloor with a very good sound system and that was the best surprise. Clash Hi-Fi delighted the crowd which skanked and sweat to the sounds of ska, rocksteady, funk, reggae and soul. It was a great night and everyone stayed til the end and shouted for more. Definitely a great night in a great place. ”
