The Albion Description

The Albion is featured in these Guides:

The Albion is a Georgian gem left over from a time when Islington was fields and farmland and where the regulars would take afternoon walks out of the city to visit us.

With its wisteria covered façade and log fires, The Albion provides the perfect location to entertain, relax and forget the stresses of modern life, combining a central Islington location, just off Upper Street, with a picturesque walled garden situated within the Barnsbury conservation area.

The Albion won The Observer Food Monthly award for “Best Sunday Lunch 2009” and is one of The Independent’s “Top 50 Sunday Lunch Venues” and The Guardian’s “Best Pubs in the UK”.

“Nice interior but overpriced and, if you don't look like the the usual, upper class, Islington crowd, expect to be served last and the service to be minimal. They even had the nerve to charge gratuity on my bill! Never again!!”

“Beautiful beer garden. Shame the beer is uninspiring and pricey. £3.70 for a bog standard Kronenberg is pushing it.”

“Its my favourite pub in London. The only place on a friday night in Angel where you can actually hear your friends talk yet its still buzzy with lots of people. Perfect combination. Intimacy with vibrancy.”

“This place is fab. It really is a hidden gem. Probably best in summer when you can appreciate the garden but still worth a visit just for the food. There are lots of cosy little nooks & crannys for the cuddling up in the winter too. The service was attentive and friendly. I would definitely recommend!”

“Lovely venue for a saturday night. It is a pleasure to come to a traditional english pub with real english food. The Braised Beef was fantastic and the selection of wine really complimented the menu. A lovely touch have dessert wine recommendations with the dessert list. Will have to make this place my local.”

“Sunday Lunch was fantastic, ubercool vibe and the lunch was great with such a large choice we opted for the traditional Roast and it was good value. The Bitter was perfect and the wine list was fair and a lot of choice by the glass.”

“yes great spot... nice beer garden etc etc... but appalling waiting staff and terrible cooking... would give it a wide berth... buy some beers and head to the park instead... there should be inspectors shutting places like this down...”

“Don't bother wasing your time in this pub. There are too many other great pubs in Islington to give this shambles your money. The refurbishment has changed what was a hidden gem into a second rate attempt at a gastropub/trendy bar. I was there on Sunday and despite there being more staff behind the bar than there were customers queuing it still took 10 minutes to get served. Avoid - and go to the Drapers Arms or The Barnsbury!”

“The previous reviewers were correct - this place had so much potential. Well I am pleased to say, as a local of the area, that it looks like fulfilling it now. The new management know what they are doing all right - amazing food, good beer, wicked wine selection, newly decorated which looks great and, come summer, a beautiful garden. Great news for Islington.”

“Aniles is right I'm afraid. The Albion has always been in need of a landlord who can see the obvious potential goldmine. Sadly, the previous landlords couldn't be bothered but despite this, if you ignored the chronic food, it at least had some atmosphere. As the scaffolding went up over the summer with 'Under New Management' signs everywhere, we began to hope.....Sadly (again) it is even worse. It is like a cross between an airport pub and the lobby bar of a cheap, nasty motorway hotel. What a waste of a great building and location.”

“Ignore all the previous reviews. The Albion has been bought up, completely stripped of its charm and personality and refurbished. It's now utterly characterless, uncomfortable and depressing. Staffed by about 500 eastern European girls in black uniforms. Bland grey interior. Dreadful 'quirky' stuff written on the walls etc. It used to be a country pub in the middle of Islington. It's now more of a Croydon pub in the middle of Islington. SHAME!”

“A lovely old pub in the heart of Islington. A great place for a drink in the sun. If there is no sun then a great place for a drink in the dark.”

“The Albion is a lovely quiet pub away from the hustle & bustle of Islington's Upper Street. Quite large in size it also has a large outside area which is perfect in the summer. With plenty of foliage surrounding the pub, it feels as though you are not quite in London, which sometimes, is always nice.”
