“You feel free in Australia,” wrote D.H. Lawrence. “There is great relief in the atmosphere - a relief from tension, from pressure, an absence of control of will or form. The Skies open above you and the areas open around you.” I’ve never been to Australia but on a cold, windy London day I can think of nowhere better.
Australians are a curious bunch. We think of them as without a care in the world apart from a cold beer and bright sunshine. We love nothing more than to savour moments of intense rivalry, reminding each other how satisfying victory tastes at the other’s expense. So Fluid have compiled London’s Best Australian Bars & Pubs, to really show what Aussie victory tastes like. Tough to admit, but it’s bloody good, mate.

Brixton / Bar / Club /
Clapham Junction - A place of worship and pilgrimage for any visiting Australian in London, that much is undoubtedly true about this particular Church. The rest, however, is a mash-up of beer that doesn't stop flowing a moment before it has to and the customary striptease shows. A must-do for anybody wanting to take the test of how truly Antipodean your party habits are.
The Commonwealth Kitchen
West End / Bar / Restaurant / Club / Cuisine: British
Charing Cross - Now I'll tread carefully here because after all, this is a Top 10 in honour of our Australian cousins and their tradition. But, as most do, they tend to get a little touchy when reminded of the Empire. Nevertheless, the premier Commonwealth Kitchen may be patronisingly named, but they boast a wide selection of beers and main courses all from Commonwealth heritage. They also have a reputation for cooking up mean kangaroo sausages.
Wimbledon / Bar / Cuisine: Eclectic
Wimbledon - Perhaps one of the most quizzical aspects of our Australian cousins is their love of what they call 'football.' I personally have never understood it because when I try to I can't get past the round pitch and the fact that there seems to be one position whose job it is to punch the ball-carrier in the back of the head. Nevertheless, the Slug in Wimbledon are proud of their AFL tradition and showcase it on their huge screens and ice-cold pints or hearty pub food. Get involved.
Fitzrovia / Bar / Restaurant / Cuisine: Australian
Fitzrovia - A breath of fresh air for Australians desperately scouring the capital for honest, Down Under cuisine. A coffee house, restaurant or takeaway depending entirely on what you fancy at the moment, Lantana is a gem in Fitzrovia with flavour, character and a sincere laid-back vibe.
