It's Wednesday (or any day, really) and you need a drink with an exotic moniker involving plenty of spirits which are shaken, not stirred. Stat. So here are our top 5 London bars to soothe that mid-week cocktail itch. Simply grab some friends and find any old excuse to tick them off the list.
Giving off a distinctly 1920s vibe with a soundtrack to match, the newly opened 5CC in the City of London (pictured above) has more than a touch of the speakeasy to it. Stacked out with wooden tables, candles and a huge bar as the centrepiece, it couldn't be much more inviting as post-work drinking hideaway. On the cocktail front, don't leave without trying the invisible mojito, or the negronis and old fashioned concoction. The whiskey-based cocktails are conjured up from the finest blends - ideal for washing down some highlights from their new bar menu, such as the veal and quail egg sliders, and the pulled-pork burgers.
Even during the week, you may have to book a table, unless you want to sup your cocktails on foot. Tucked underground, The Lucky Pig cocktail den houses tables made from old chests, mismatched furniture and several tables hidden by thick velvet curtains. It's about as hipster as you can get in this part of town. The cocktails are divine - though not for those watching the pennies. Try the gin and champagne mixer, or one of the many fruity options for a mid-week boost.
Predictable it may seem, but The Shoreditch bar serves up a mighty fine cocktail amongst the artisan beers many of its neighbours seem to be drowning in. The most extravagant on the list is undoubtedly the 10-person champagne and vodka bowl served in - wait for it - a tigers head. How gauche! But at around £180 a pop, we recommend you instead stick to the standard cocktails like the Jack Daniels and pineapple infused Happy Buddha, or the intriguing Dead Gold Fish.
Fancy a trip to a deserted beach somewhere with nothing but white sands, sea, and exotic cocktails? Ok, so Kanaloa bar can't serve up the first two, but it can deliver on the third. Wander into this bar and you can't escape the 360-degree Hawaiian atmosphere. With its wacky themed cocktails (which are 2-4-1 on selected weeknights), it's the next best thing to a deserted island to while away your workday woes. Well, in central London, anyway.
Gin lovers, come hither and make a Graphic bar your Mecca. This little hideout serves gin specialities such as the Mediterranean-influenced Gin Mare, and the mouth-watering Yellow, which comprises Tanqueray, maraschino and pineapple. Sure, there are gin-free bits and bobs on offer too, but when in Rome. Plus, any cocktail bar that advertises 'Disco Drinks' from the 1970s-1990s has got to be worth a try.
