Restaurant: Aqua Kyoto
Aphrodisiac ingredient: Asparagus
Dish: Miso-marinated black cod with white asparagus and uni butter
Why you should order: The asparagus is one sexy vegetable, in looks, taste and benefits. It looks phallic (stop pretending you hadn't noticed!) and when cooked right has a satisfying, snappy taste and texture; so pop it in your mouth and enjoy. It's said to be a sex hormone booster even if it does make your pee smell. The dish is part of the Valentine's Day 2014 menu which will cost you £80 but does also include diver-caught scallops, Awgyu sirloin and Veuve Cliquot Champagne.
Aphrodisiac ingredient: Oysters
Dish: Dressed oysters with ginger, chilli, & soy
Why you should order it: The mother of all aphrodisiacs, oysters have been turning people on since ancient Greek times. They're full of zinc which helps produce testosterone thus stimulating the male libido (easy now boys!). It also fuels the female libido. Oysters are best served raw, the dine-hard fans will tell you, but there's nothing wrong with dressing them up with a bit of ginger, chilli (both aphrodisiacs) and soy sauce.
Aphrodisiac ingredient: Tiger's milk
Dish: Don Ceviche fresh seabass ceviche in amarillo chilli tiger's milk, limo chilli sweet potato red onion
Why you should order it: Tiger's milk – aka leche de tigre – aka Peruvian viagra. Need we say any more?
Aphrodisiac ingredient: Salmon
Dish: Salmon carpaccio
Why you should order it there: The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon raises the serotonin levels in the brain which elevates the mood and reduces irritability. At Sticks'n'Sushi the fish is fresh and well sourced. The Scottish salmon is sourced from Loch Duart. The Covent Garden Branch has a dark (in an intimate rather than dingy) setting which gives it a sexy jazz-bar vibe. Salmon sushi in sexy surroundings. Why aren't you booking right now?!
Aphrodisiac ingredient: Pomegranite
Dish: Sumak lamb kofte
Why you should order it: Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, supposedly planted the first pomegranate tree so it could spread throughout the world. The passion power of the pomegranate comes from their antioxidants which allows more blood to circulate and results in increased, ahem, genital sensitivity. The sumak lamb kofte is tender grilled lamb on a skewer with salad, rose harissa yoghurt and pomegranate. Sounds like love. Looks like love. Tis love.
As for the drinks...
Bar: the Red Bar at Bam-Bou
Aphrodisiac ingredient: coffee
Drink: Rocket Fuel – for those who have lost the lust (Illy coffee, Kirsch Eau De Vie, Cherry Heering)
Why you should order it: The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant that raises the heart rate and makes the blood flow which can put you in the mood for sex.
Bar: The Wine Parlour
Aphrodisiac: Red wine
Drink: A Cabernet Suavignon like Santa Cecilia Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2010
Why should you order it: A glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away...and your inhibitions so it seems. Red wine has high levels of polyphenols, antioxidants which increases blood flow. Wine also helps you to feel relaxed.
NB: As always, please be responsible when drinking alcohol. Sip slowly, not slurp speedily and a glass or two will do. Just don't overdo it or you'll lose your mood for love.
