The highest restaurant in London, open 24/7, Duck & Waffle near Liverpool Street offers amazing views (pictured above) and appetisers at altitude. The signature dish is, of course, the Duck & Waffle, which comprises a crispy duck leg confit with a duck egg and a waffle slathered in mustard maple syrup. This is accompanied by the house special ‘All About Mary' cocktail, which comes with your choice of spirit blended with a secret recipe of tomato juice cooked with thyme, rosemary, lemon and truffle, you've got yourself enviable early-morning eats.
For a true breakfast bonanza, Hawksmoor cannot be beaten. The underground cavern of food wonders at the Guildhall branch of the infamous steakhouse near Moorgate is just the ticket for this early hour of the day. A menu that spans from a full English to lobster Benedict, via bubble and squeak made with short ribs, should inspire any meat-lover. There's even a sharer option, which comes with marrowbone. Try the Salty Dog cocktail to kick-start the day, made with vodka and freshly-squeezed grapefruit, or the Black Velvet should separate the men from the boys: it's a concoction of champagne and Guinness.
The Breakfast Club is rapidly taking over with locations all over London, but the Spitalfields branch is still our favourite, mostly for the secret delights that lay behind the mysterious Smeg fridge. Breakfast has an American leaning, with bacon and banana French toast and Ham SoEggsite Pancakes of ham, egg, cheese and maple syrup. Order a morning Mojito to start the day with a bang: it's gold rum, orange juice, lime and mint. Or for the caffeine addicts, you can never go wrong with an Espresso Martini.
On Gracechurch Street near Bank, The Folly is a quirky bar that has a few sister locations dotted around the city, but still manages to feel unique. Steak and eggs and the Folly Fully Loaded will hit the spot for sure, but the Californian Kickstart of hummus, guacamole and sweet chilli sauce on a poached egg topped muffin is a winner. The Breakfast in Bloom Martini with grapefruit juice and marmalade is a glass of zingy freshness, and for something a bit more powerful, try the Folly Bloody Mary, which has a dollop of horseradish in it.
Renowned for its City Boy Breakfast, the Fox and Anchor pub in Farringdon caters for big appetites: big food and a huge drinks menu. The Charterhouse Street staple serves up a full English with the big boy additions of kidney, liver, minute steak and white pudding – not for the feint hearted. There are six ales on tap and a massive selection of bottles ranging from wheat beer to fruitier tipples. We're particularly curious about a 6% Scottish Stout called Old Engine Oil. And if it's something lighter you're looking for, there's always the classic egg and soldiers for wimps.
