Supermarket shelves in Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose are likely to lie empty of eggs, flour, lemon and sugar by the end of Tuesday 12th February as we celebrate Shrove Tuesday, and the beginning of Lent, by filling our plates with a million flat, spherical treats.

Pancake Day is not merely a dinner table pastime to be enjoyed at home, however, and London's bars and restaurants are more than ready to provide the necessary ingredients for lazy Londoners who'd rather let someone else do the hard work.

Booze hounds - you know who you are - Pancake Day for you should involve a booking at Le Metro restaurant in Knightsbridge where standard lemon-and-sugar pancakes will come with an extra kick: a shot of tequila or warm chocolate and clotted cream with a shot of Baileys for £7.50. Book using the calendar below.Fans of the TV Show Man Vs Food who claim to have a hearty appetite will want to look to one of the The Breakfast Club restaurants in Soho, Angel, the City or Hoxton on Pancake Day. The challenge: 12 pancakes in 20 minutes. Complete the challenge and your bill is waived; lose and you'll be donating profits to the Rays of Sunshine charity.

This challenge comes with a warning though: these are American sized pancakes, replete with berries, maple syrup and lashings of cream. The Hoxton and Spitalfields branches will also be hosting pancake speed eating competitions from 7.30pm. The man or woman to consume 6 pancakes in the fastest time will win a dinner and drinks for six people. Email to enter.

Brand new crepe restaurant and intimate cocktail speakeasy, Shutterbug in Shoreditch launches this week with a special Pancake Day and Mardi Gras party on Tuesday 12th February from 6.30pm. As well as Mardi Gras pancakes - such as the savoury pulled pork buckwheat crepes with cheese and pickles, or the sweet honey, almond and mascarpone crepes - there will be DJs, dancing, and pancake races.

The Water Poet bar in Spitalfields is hosting a Pancake Theatre in the rear covered, heated garden on Shrove Tuesday. The menu includes savoury Stilton, broccoli and Meantime Pale Ale pancakes with pine nut dressing and tossed salads (£7.50) and the sweet Aspall cider, Cox's apple, golden raisin and cinnamon pancakes with clotted cream (£6). Or, you can simply create your own for £3.50.

If you've previously had brunch at The Diner at The Exhibit in Balham, you'll know only too well about the great pancakes made therein. So, on Shrove Tuesday, if you buy any main meal in The Diner, you'll also get a stack of three pancakes as a dessert absolutely FREE.

In addition to these delicious offers and events, there will be a plateful of charity pancake races taking place across London. These include the Better Bankside's Annual Charity Pancake Race in Borough Market, the Parliamentary Pancake Race on Millbank, and the The Great Spitalfields Pancake at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane.
