“What a great place to spend the evening. Start the night with some realy good Brazilian food followed buy a few cachaca cocktails and lively salsa danceing This place brings London alive at night the bar is great and the drinks flow without that up your own bum attitude of bar staff you get in some of the other west end bars. If you just want to have a great night out eat drink and dance then give Salsa a try.”

Gordon's Wine Bar, West End (Bar)
“Gordon’s is a bit of an institution. Once you’ve found the entrance and gone down the steep stairs you come into a vaulted cellar usually packed with punters sat at various tables and chairs of all shapes and sizes. The focus here is on wine (well it’s full name is Gordon’s Wine Bar after all); the list is extensive and includes fortified wines. They also have what looks to be a simple but good food menu. This is a great place for meeting, eating and drinking with friends.”

Janet's Bar, Kensington (Bar)
“This place is pretty unique; it’s relaxed, down to earth and individual. The walls are covered with pictures of the regulars, press cuttings and cartoons of the licensee Janet. There’s a little raised terrace out the front that is great in the summer and where you might get embroiled conversation with Janet’s husband. The drinks menu isn’t extensive, but this doesn’t really matter and as for food, well they’ll phone you in a pizza!”

“Went last Saturday night (18/01/03) for the first and very impressed. After being past the old pub many times to/from work without ever wanting to go in it shows what a great job they've done on it. Nice relaxing and warm atmosphere, very friendly staff and a good mix of people. Food was good if a bit limited. If you have a chance try their rib eye steak with nut dumplings - I didn't have it but after tasting a friends I wished I had. A great addition to Barnes !!”

The Porterhouse, West End (Bar / Restaurant)
“This is a great place for those who like their beers and wines. The place not only does not do any of the usual tipples, but have a great alternative selection, esp Chiller from the US. Probably the only good US lager. Try some more exotic beers, like Crazy Ed's Chili Beer which is kinda hot! You can also get a taster platter for the more common beers to get your ideas of what you would like etc for not more than a fiver. All in all, a great bar/pub near to Covent Garden, that is a great tucked away place..”

Fluid, Clerkenwell (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“Price Japanese-theme sushi bar, encapsulating London’s pretension in a nutshell. The staff’s appearance is of models with the day off, and the attitude that comes to boot with this can be unappealing. They do, however, possibly hold the best encouraging tip-tray look in the whole of the capital. Fluid does, though, have some saving graces. The clientele aren’t as poncy as you might perhaps expect, the beer vending machine is a useful novelty and, as always, the retro video games give a sense of inherent cool”

19:20 Cocktail Pool Bar, City of London (Bar)
“It is said this pool bar has had the feng-shui treatment. If you are unsure about that, rest assured the aim of the ancient art is at least achieved. Everything in this cosy saloon seems designed to have an unwinding quality. The main underground area is set up like a crèche for the arty rich. Padded walls are their comforting surroundings, chilled-out beats their nursery rhymes and the well stacked bar their milk and cookies. It looks modern, with imaginative furniture etc., but you leave with the distinct impression this place holds practicality over pretension. Welcoming.”

The Albany, Fitzrovia (Bar)
“Formerly the Fitz & Firkin, this pub was redecorated in around aug/nov 2002, in a subtle shade of ''undercoat'' some trendy seats were added and the lighting budget was blown on ONE star shaped arrangement which needs lots of lightbulbs. There are one or two gaming machines in the corner, handy for those of us who missed the amusement arcade, and are too lazy to leave. The food in this bar is quite good but very expensive for the quantitiy supplied. Beers are good and staff are friendly, MUCH better than the staff that ran this venue in its Firkin days. The seating arrangemnets are poor and this poses a problem on Fridays when it fills to capacity with young and not so young guys and gals. The music is AWFUL, trendy winebar repetitive thumpin ("is that CD scratched?") The folks who visit here on friday are invariably on their way somewhere, and things tend to calm down a bit aroung 9:30 ish. Do not expect to meet your future spouse here as cross-group communication is frowned upon ”

Queens Head and Artichoke, Camden (Bar)
“This sterile little bar was recently renovated, in the cheapest possible manner, to create a quasi yuppie drinking den, but without any yuppies. The music is played at supermarket or lift musak volume, i.e just audible, and of the same bland and sometimes downright depressing quality. Which is probably why the staff are so dour, or perhaps they are tired of the reaction they get to the ridiculously overpriced ''tapas'' which at £2.50 to £3.50 per item is just exorbitant. This venue has no redeeming factors AVOID ”

“A hidden gem off Pall Mall. Very old and cosy, with an upstairs that looks like your grandmother's parlour. The perfect place to take your drunk friends when they start making a scene at your club.”

“This is a mind blowingly good Indian, beating an old favorite of mine, The Bombay Brasserie, hands down. The food is great, the atmosphere is like a huge Indian wedding, & the price is about £50 per head inc wine. Order a bottle of Omar Kayam with your meal. It is an Indian Sparkling Chardonnay. Sounds vile? Convinced you could only drink IPA or lager with a curry? Trust me - its not named after Persia's top poet for nothing.”

“Originally the watering hole of Wellington's men, then made famous in the 80's by Yuppies quaffing bubbly and talking nonsense to each other. Now a fantastic place to go for Sunday lunch, but book in advance as the dining room is small. Try and look as if you live in Belgravia when you walk in or people will stare. This means wear your cheapest togs and talk quietly. The Bloody Mary bar is a real saviour if you are nursing a hangover. It is also an easy walk to Apsley House, Wellington's old digs, now a museum, if you want to look at loads of booty from his career after lunch. There is a fantastic Carravagio on the ground floor.”

“Extravagantly set in an old bank by The Ritz this chinese restaurant is a favorite of mine becuase it is very good and very cheap. Easy to get out with a meal only a little more than your average Chinese, but the location, the food and the stunning decor all add up to something you would expect to cost twice as much. The dim sum is as good as anywhere in town.”

Blakes, Kensington (Bar / Restaurant / Hotel)
“Insanely expensive. Only go here if you are proposing to someone and can put it on expenses. That said, the environment is unique and seductive. Very 1930s with a strange gothic overtone. Imagine Poirot's dreams after too much Absinthe. The food is divine and the wine list is very good if you can take that kind of pressure.”
