The Black Lion 2 South Black Lion Lane, Riverside, Hammersmith, London, W6 9TJ (Map)

A wonderful traditional pub on the river, good quialty food and a huge garden with ample seating for the summer. A very enjoyable place for a few drinks with friends, not packed to the hilt like the Old... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“I have to agree with all the above posts, the EGG rocks like no other, went there on a Sat and left Sun afternoon. People great and no one has there head stuck up there a** and the music at another level with the best in Electronic house and deep down n dirty house, this place was a F**KEN hitter and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a night or 2 in 1 to head over there....”

“Barabara, I have to say that what you call a "faschist view", I would call a "blessing in disguise". Don't get me wrong, I love kids and have nieces and nephews, but the pub just isn't the place for them. The Canonbury serves great food and drinks and has a lovely area out the back, great on summers days. Making this an adults playground as opposed to a kids one was a smart move, sorry Barbara!!”

“What a great place! The food was lovely (The lamb shank amazing!) and the service was great. In London it is rare to find a place that can offer this kind of value for money.”

The Dove, Hammersmith (Bar)
“It's a good oldy worldy pub but don't go there to eat. Service took over 40 mins. My partner had a steak and ale pie which had more of a shortcrust pastry than the nice light fluffy puff pastry and the gravy was more like water. I had a grilled salmon salad. It was in fact a plate of salad with a few flakes of salmon - I would bet that there was perhaps less than 100g (ie less than half a pack of M&S salmon flakes). Each of these was £8.95, so an absolute rip-off.”

“The Old Ship is a fantastic venue in the summer - can become a little overcrowded at times though. Food is good. Relaxed atmosphere and a great place to meet a bunch of friends.”

“This used to be a great place but in 2005 they took a faschist view and banned children - even during the day. No comment. Needless to say we don't go there anymore. Same goes for many Islinton couples I know. Shame on you Canonbury Tavern!”

Rockwell Bar, West End (Bar / Hotel)
“The ground floor bar is great - atmospheric, low lit and intimate. But woe betide the person who tries to meet a friend in the rooftop part. Whilst the views are incredible and the surroundings (furniture, beautiful people, desirable waiters) enticing, the entry policy - one in, one out (restricted due to fire exit strategies, I presume) means its best to go with a friend rather than meet one there (unless you pick one up!). I was not the only disappointed customer on a sunny May evening. Be warned.”

Picture of Thirst, Soho, London

Thirst, Soho (Bar)
“Al might like to think that Ron's review is inaccurate but I too have been told by the doormen 'we've let too many in tonight'. It's not a case of being busy and loud, it's being so busy that fights or at least agro starts. Whilst I've been at Thirst this has happened precisely because too many people were in the venue. It's not a particularly aggressive atmosphere but when everyone is crushed and has no choice other than being in each other's faces then these things happen. On the night I was in there, it was extremely loud. It’s no use saying go back to the suburbs (other than being rude it doesn’t address the criticisms). I like a bar where you can speak without having to shout so loud in your mate’s face that you singe their eyebrows with your breath. And the drinks are over priced. They might be cheaper than other venues but that doesn’t mean Thirst is good value. It just means other places are bigger rip offs. The only consolation is that - as someone who’s been going out in Soho for years - I know these places come and go. They’re transient because most people only go once and the custom dries up. I was in a big party the last time I was in Thirst – it was a friend’s leaving do. I also met another party – everyone was slagging the place off. If you head to the suburbs, you might find a decent bar. I’d recommend it to anyone tempted to go to Thirst.”

The Chandos, West End (Bar)
“Grrr.... to the luddite reviews. The Chandos is, quite simply, a great pub. It's cheap, in an incredible location (which makes the price all the more impressive) and the beer is nice. I guess if I try hard, I have three complaints: one is that I once had watery salsa with my nachos (which the staff replaced for me) and two is that it's a victim of its own success - it can get pretty busy in there the choice of spirits is very limited (Also, I don't understand quite how Harry can give it 1 out of 5 for value for money. It's £1.70 for a pint. In the West End. How effing cheap does it need to be? Sam Smith pubs are always excellent (check out the labyrinthine Old Cheshire Cheese down by St Pauls). When Britain goes non-smoking, my liver's gonna get even more of a hammering....”

The Windmill, Clapham (Bar / Hotel)
“The pub has a policy of plastic cups for everyone who sits outside whether you want to go onto the park or not. I can't understand this as it cannot be for safety reasons as bottles are readily available. Is it just me who like my beer out of a pint glass??? The food was very ordinary as is everything about this pub.”

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead (Bar)
“The Spaniard's is probably my favourite pub in London (I grew up around the corner) and, despite the occasional change of ownership has never lost its charm nor ambience. And unlike other local pubs the traditional interior has been maintained. It's great to come here on a winter's evening, step out from the cold into what feels like a cheery, village pub. But in the summer it is even better with one of the best beer gardens I have seen and it does get absolutely rammed! And despite being only 25 yards from the road traffic is not heard. A gem.”
