The Retro Bar 2 George Court, Adelphi, off The Strand, Charing Cross, London, WC2N 6HH (Map)

Hello retro bar. I was 65 today on the 28th May, and I thought I would visit the Retro bar with a younger friend (37). Sadley, the Bar lady, Wendy Lestoy, decided that because I had a drink earlier in... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“The Green Man has recently changed hands - unfortunately for the worse. The new landlady appears reasonably on the ball but her husband got into the gene pool while the lifeguard wasn't looking - frankly, this man would be out of his depth in a car park puddle (as indeed would some of the bar staff). While it may be easy to ignore the odd jarring note, it seems difficult to ignore the rapid decline of the food, the doing away with a promising line up of local musical talent twice a week and a pub quiz that makes counting sheep seem like a dangerous sport. This is lowest common denominator pub running at its nadir.”

“With any luck someone with some common sence will take this place over and restore it to its former glory. All they have to do is call it 'boho chic' and and fool everyone into thinking its 'retro' and 'old school'. They ignored the old phrase "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and look what happened. A testiment to the unpopular nature of the refit was that it only took a couple of years after the bland refurb for it to shut. Heres hoping luxuary flats aren't on their way to replace this once great old pub.”

“I went to Beduin last night for my mates birthday party and had the best time i've had for ages. The decor is fab and welcoming and the bar staff are attentive and quick. I would highly reccomend this venue to anyone looking for a stylish place to have a good time in.”

“The enterprise, can be crowded, and a bit crazy on the weekend but is by far the best pub to hit before you go out in camden. All different mix of characters but is the hidden secret for the trendsters. The music is loud, but thats how we like it. For anyone that wants an atmosphere to let go in. Enjoy.”

“Wow! What a place. While i was in Bazz's extremely talented sons sung for us. The one i liked the most was matt, who was a very handsome young man although only 13 years old. I highly reccomed the bar for anyone wanting a good time with mellow jazz and rock'n'roll. Amazing. ”

Le QuecumBar & Brasserie, Battersea (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“I feel compelled to contact you with a review, not of the experience my husband and I had at Le Quecumbar, but of the sheer lack of it. It was a Sunday afternoon, and we were taking a stroll around 5:30pm, too late for lunch, a bit early for dinner but we thought any place open and running would do. What better than a French wine bar (we love wine) we found just round the corner. It was open but desolate, only a young man and a young lady behind the bar welcoming us in and informing us that we will have to pay £12 entrance EACH. We asked why and were told that at 8pm (or was it 8:30pm?) a live band would be playing and that this is the entrance fee/ticket to see them. We informed them in return that we simply want some food (we were starving) and a drink and that would not take us three hours. They said it makes no difference; we'll have to pay the £24 for the live entertainment we were never going to get to see. I looked around at the empty place and due only to my hunger I suggested the option of staying for some food and, at the exceptional circumstance we were to still be chewing on our food three hours later, when the band would start performing, to pay for the privilege of enjoying their music. 'Non' was the answer; we have to pay £24 for the privilege of eating at the establishment, music or no music. A totally absolutely empty of any costumers’ establishment, may I add. A totally absolutely empty of our custom establishment for ever, I need not add.”

The Exhibit, Balham (Bar / Restaurant)
“Goodness me - don't believe the hype! I have lived in Balham for 5 years and, whilst the food at The Exhibit is consisently good, the service is amateurish; on my last visit on 17 May, the food was gorgeous but we sat for 20 minutes before we were even offered a drink. Inter course service, so to speak, was not much better and certainly there is no comaparison to the slick, attentive and professional service at Balham Bar and Kitchen. Generally, a good restaurant but could do a lot better! ”

“The staff in here are so miserable, you get the feeling they'd rather be on the other side of the bar. Lunchtime food took 45 mins to arrive and was mediocre when it did.”

“Me and three of my friends paid the Grand Union a visit on Saturday night, and we weren't disappointed! The food was amazing (i recommend the bangers and mash!) and really reasonably priced. The bar area was lively, with fab music and a great atmosphere! I thoroughly recommend the Grand Union for fun and funky night out!!”

“Awesome bar, location staff!! One of the best days out ever. Only bad thing i can say is that when its hot don't expect 5 star serviec, cause you can't fit enough staff in that building to look after the jampacked outside area. DJ racked up some awesome tunes. When its hot get there early, eat and then just lay back andenjoy sipping your pims and lemonade soaking up the sun.”

Picture of Cafe de Paris, West End, London

Cafe de Paris, West End (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“Went to Café de Paris for a meal & a dance to celebrate my forthcoming wedding… What a MISTAKE. They told us they opened at 6 but we had to wait until they opened at 7. The meal we ordered proved to be, at best, mediocre. For £60/head I strongly advise you to go to any of the myriad of excellent restaurants in London. Opt for somewhere where the chef knows the difference between a soufflé and a mousse, and where they have a restaurant wine list (not a “family” restaurant list at exploitative prices.) At the end of the meal the 12.5% tip was automatically added to our bill, yet the waitress became very moody about our decision not to pay her a further tip. Next, the entertainment. Great double bassist and pianist; but the Frank Sinatra impersonator was appalling. My grandad gives a more impressive rendition after a few glasses of wine. Finally, the club. Being a hen night, my friends had brought along a little tiara for me. We were quickly told "no headwear". I asked if I could speak to their GM. “The Manager” arrived and re-iterated what had been said. I asked if (were I a Jewish guy) they would have problems with me wearing the kippot. Their response: 1) I would be told to remove it & 2) They HAVE told people to remove their religious headwear. A most depressing end to a miserable evening. So please. If you like good food, good wine, good service, good music or certainly if you think that people have the right to wear religious dress PLEASE BOYCOTT THIS PLACE.”

The Victoria, Battersea (Bar)
“I love The Victoria. Since it changed hands and had a re-fit, it's become my favourite pub in the area. It has wicked food every day and night with massive all day brunch on saturdays and roasts on Sundays - perfect for a hangover. Real ales, coffee, sport, papers, sofas, non-smoking section, outside tables, pool...what more could you want? Oh yes, Boogie the dog, a Sunday quiz, and good staff behind the bar.”

Saravanas, Willesden (Restaurant)
“Saravanas interior is pretty awful, but the food certainly makes up for it, its genuine southern Indian food. It tastes of fresh spices and everyone I take there loves it, particularly because its prices are so reasonable.”

Mahdi Restaurant, Hammersmith (Restaurant)
“The menu at Mahdi is one of the best I've seen in Iranian/Persian restaurants. Normally the choice is limited to a cholo kabab but here you have a lot of other great Iranian dishes (like fesenjoon) that you can try. The quality of the food was good, the price reasonable (under £20 pp) and the service efficient. The decor is traditional yet minimalist with paintings from the great Iranian miniaturist Mahmoud Farshchian covering several walls. So overall I would definitely recommend this restaurant.”
