“It is an amazing place. The first reviewer is correct in saying that the only way to get in is by being a member or someone of "note". However membership is £250 per annum with an £250 joining fee, so pretty reasonable, when you think that ChinaWhite is £750! However, applications for membership are reviewed by the owners, so quite tough! One other point, the club is backed by the ChinaWhite owners, so expect it to be as good, if not better.”

The Angelic, Angel & Islington (Bar)
“I stumbled across this place whilst recovering from a particularly nasty case of the shingles, and contrary to the advice of my medical practioner I proceeded to purchase several beverages of beery goodness from the stout yeoman of the bar. When I say stout, I really mean small and ginger but he was a cheery fellow and does a great line in condom and nasal cavity based party tricks. My apologies I digress, anyway the fluids consumed were tasty yet still left enough change in my pocket to pay for my over-priced medication from my local pharmacist. The musical entertainment was quite literally music to my ears, but somehow also lifted my spirits from the boggy mire of self pity that only scabies can inflict. Following this remarkably successful visit to the Angelic I have decided to recommend it to all my parishioners, brethren and other heavily soiled individuals as if it does them half the good it did to me then the people of Islington will have a lot more joy in their hearts and lot less warts on their tadgers.”

“owned by the same happy peeps as the stonemasons, pilot is a similar formula successfully repeated in this quiet location. definately more of a local''s place filled with late twenty and thirty-somethings ''fashionista'' types. it''s more focused towards being a restaurant than a pub, but when it gets busier the bar area is filled with people out for a drink. but the food is the main reason for going. it''s superb. starters are verging on main portion size and are outstanding. mains are fantastic and the menu changes frequently. quality and service is better than the stonemasons... superb range of beer (leffe, hoegaarden and staropramen on tap), good wine and other drinks on par for the type of establishement. prices are slightly under the stonemasons, so it''s well worth the walk / taxi down there. the only downside is that it is a little bright. if you like gastropubs, do try it!”

“Service is very poor. Do not complain if your food takes more than 45 minutes to be served. We did, and they served us a plate full of burnt food. This plate is definitely worth a miss”

“Appallingly slow service last night and a rude, confrontational and threatening attitude from the staff when I dared to complain. I was refused access to a manager. We left and went to the Hoop and Toy around the corner where the experience was totally different. Fast service and friendly staff. I am sending a written complaint. ”

The Maple Leaf, West End (Bar)
“To the best of my knowledge London's only Canadian bar. It serves Canadian beer (Molson and Moosehead, if I remember correctly) and some Canadian specialities. However it hardly does justice to the wide range of beers available in Canada (where for example are the excellent Unibroue beers from Quebec, or even Alexander Keith's IPA) and the menu isn't *very* Canadian. A pleasant place, but could be a lot better if it used a bit of imagination.”

“An excellent find in the area, tucked away from the normal crowds, but close enough to turnmills etc... The cocktails and shooters can not be given enough credit - a choice of 100 so you can never get bored. Although pretty small, it keeps a great cosy feel, with some medusa style lighting (you'll see what I mean) and candles. An easy place to spend a whole evening and not realise it!”

“A good find, a bit pricey for drinks but a good selection. Still suffers a little from the too cool media types, but the 4 pool tables downstairs (£10 and hour if i remember correctly) are a welcome change to this sort of place. The furniture is great, only problem is sometimes too comfy and when your laid out fully in them it's hard to hear your mates over the funk/jazz DJ. All in all worth a visit, especially outside normal drinking hours, when its a great relaxing place.”

“We had the best drinks in the city of London at the Avenue. The bartender makes the best drinks in town. The wait staff is overly accomodating even to Americans! We can't tell you how much we enjoyed this place. The cab driver thought we were locals because we went there so much!”

“This place has a personality all its own - sports screens, cocktails, no pretensions, and the best menu I've ever seen at a bar. The music is cool, gets you in the mood. Its a top mix, one of the best bars I've been to in London.”

“The staff make you wait to be served whilst they file their nails and watched tv, they were also very rude. the beer is expensive and tastes wrong and has the biggest head! and the food is ridiculous i had nachos it said on the menu tortilla chips with peppers, sour cream, cheese and salsa- i got beef flavored tortilla with lettice(yes lettice!) very runny salsa, a huge blob of sour cream which was curdeled and cheese which was only half melted! it was disgusting. my friend had the all day breakfast which he got chips egg and bacon and wait for it beans and peas!!! (beans and peas on the same plate YUK!) and to top it all off my beer had a fly in it, i'd only had a few sips so i asked for it to be changed and the barmaid basically told me to f*** off! very strongly not recommended!”

“I have been to this bar many times and have always been given a warm welcome and had a good time. In the summer the big beer garden at the back is decked out in flowers and is a great place for a long afternoon/early evening session. In winter the fire and hearty lunchtime menu also do the trick. They have a DJ on Friday nights and it's a great roomy venue to have a private party on a Saturday. Superb.”

“Great atmosphere really good for winding down after a days work. Freindly people easy to make freinds. Not enough seats you may end up standing if you go late but do not know how they would get more seats in. Live music is of great standard. Drinks are a little expensive but you get to sit in a good atmosphere and have music played for you. Just a great place to go drink play cards and listen to the blues!”

The North Star, Ealing (Bar)
“Nice atmosphere and has come a long way since it's old-man-watering-hole roots... Nice comfortable sofas, seated on which one can enjoy a decent, if overpriced large glass of wine [or two, by which time you've pretty much had the bottle, so why not just order one of those - Ed]. Prices can be as high as £4.50 a glass, but still, The North Star is the better choice from a poor selection of non-pikey places to go in Ealing.”
