What this site refers to as "old man's pubs" are in fact much better in every respect that the vast majority of the dull, standardised, slightly desperate, "youth oriented" bars now so prevelant in Central... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“NASTY! There is only one word to describe this place on saturday nights and that's NASTY. CROWD: Young university crowd. If you're into hip hop dancing and a crowd that knows how to shake their stuff - FORGET IT. VENUE: Big venue, big spacious rooms, small podium and stage MUSIC: Mostly commerical hip hop r'n'b - but good luck in getting the DJ to play any requests RATIO: 70% boys, 30% chics VERDICT: Such a shame to waste a good sized venue”

“My friend and I had a lovely evening in this bar. The staff were great - all Spanish speakers (Spanish, Italian and Mexican) and the tapas were generous and tasty. Sadly, it wasn't very busy and the staff outnumbered customers so it looks like it may not last long. Catch it while you can.”

“Excellent, if fairly pricy food. Good selection of more interesting draught lagers too - i.e Kirin. Mixed crowd but nearly always very friendly.”

“Definitely an after-school, after-work sort of place, load your frustrations with a few beverages and hit the dance floor. The first time I went to this industrial venue was back when they were hosting UP! one of London's gay promotions. They have since had a lot of ethnic nights including Kindred Spirit where I just couldn't miss seeing rapper TY for £5. A very different crowd. I have to say that since I moved to East London I got sick of all the trendy Shoreditch twat sort of places, paying to get into bars or paying too much to get into a gig I could see somewhere else for cheaper. A small venue with three cool rooms, three bars and I have to say a very friendly staff (which is why we at Metro Life voted them one of the 5 friendliest clubs in London). Drinks, not ridiculous in price, and one of the latest licences in Tower Hamlets. If you're up for partying until 5am on weekends for a little bit of the ol'bling, then check it out.”

“Yeah yeah yeah its easy to pick holes in Cheapskates, but the thing is, everyone is there to rock. And despite playing some cheesy things, the DJs can mix like maniacs between genres. The biggest problem is that they sometimes play the same tunes 3 times in a night.”

“What a superb atmostphere. The bar staff are alway friendly and work the bar in a very efficient manner. The clientele are also a very friendly bunch. They also have some excellent drinks promotions throughout the week, which always goes down well!! With the venue in such proximity to Trafalgar Square, some how you never seem to feel too cramped. Excellent boozer in all!”

The Holly Bush, Hampstead (Bar / Restaurant)
“When I was young, there used to be small village near me called Ashby Parva, with a pub called the Hollybush. Which, to be frank, was a bit poo. Its Hampstead namesake is however a differant kettle of fish. If you can find it tucked away in the backstreets, you will come across coal fires, good real ales (unusual in london), alcoves and snugs aplenty, and great food selection. A proper village pub all in all, if rather lacking in young farmers out on the scrumpy.”

“This place is the hottest bar / club in London. Impossible to get in. For this reason, they have increased the membership fee to £1000 for the year. Nevertheless, if you want to party with the international jet-set; then it's going to cost.”

“After a weary day of walking about London, the Salisbury was a exactly what we all needed. It was quite a lively pub, the bar staff were quick and profesional, yet relaxed, and the pub itself brought one back to what London Pubs would have appeared centuries ago(I presume)! What a gem! Out of the hundreds of pubs to choose from, I'd go out of my way for a pint of four at the Salisbury.”

“went there on a saturday night after reading a review on this web site. they take bookings 8pm and before so if you really want a table, make sure you get there early as there isnt many tables. upstairs is a bar and food service, downstairs is a dancefloor. food is ok(dont order chicken wings as there are fresh ones mixed with not so fresh and pizza base was quite tough)but stick to chips although they did tell me that they are going to have a proper chef cooking for them very soon. if cocktails is your thing then this place is second to none, prices are standard west end but the quality is exceptional with very knowledgable barmen who have 1000 different recipes in their heads(along with a tom cruise style throwing the bottles about thing)if you dont want anything on their menu. doormen were also very friendly as were the rest of the staff making it an altogether great place to go. ”

“on a sunday night the trafalgar tavern is one of the best places you can be. walking upstairs you can hear the sound of the band warming up and having a pre-gig jam. the whole place is full of people young and old that have come to listen to this superb band who play music from pop to jazz, funk to rock. thay interact with their audience and the atmosphere is buzzing. there is no hostility or "clicky" feelings. no need to dress up or down or worry what you look like, because on a sunday everyone is there to have a good time...and get pissed!”

The Pilot, Chiswick & Brentford (Bar / Restaurant)
“This used to be a cracking little local boozer but it's now nothing more than a bland run of the mill gastro pub (a term to strike fear into the heart of any discerning drinker). Before renovation The Pilot boasted beautiful Victorian mirrors, a friendly set of regulars, a Bendy Bully above the dart board and a wall full of photos of guide dogs for the blind sponsored by the pub. It's now void of any character - a bit like the people who frequent it - and I can find no reason to recommend it at all. Make a stand against the erosion of the great British local boozer and avoid The Pilot and its like.”

Picture of The Angelic, Angel & Islington, London

The Angelic, Angel & Islington (Bar)
“I have recently been to the Angelic in Islington and found it to be of pleasure to me. The knots in my back were eased by the tasy sofas, which I can say are not in possesion of unlikeness to the ones in my living room. This is good as I would like them ones there in my living room thankyou. Whence I did travel down to hell-toilets in place afore mentioned to do a chocolate otter, I too spent a moment of silent mirth with myself and no others but the otter. At the sounds of Delboy and Rodders I did giggle with no audio whilst feeling the porcelain frontage of the bowl touching my purple end (Mmmm). "Aaah the joys of public humiliation" I thought as I wet myself walking out of the Gentleman's special place for gentlemen. Two girls look'd South at my personage and in disgust they did mew like filthy stray cats on heat as they enjoyed what could only be described as an eyeful of Gomorrah whilst supping beer served by a ginger elf. Upon ordering some of this food in that place I found myself looking hither and thither at the morcels of tasy food finding it's end in the wet holes of the patron's fat, smiling, faces. Eat now! eat! I did cry to my brethren and a hearty feast we did have and all were merry that eve. Yay oh yay, yay and never nay. Long live the Angelic and the delights of the ginger elf for it is heavenly.”
