The Duke of Cambridge 30 St Peters St, Angel, Islington, London, N1 8JT (Map)

This place is now terrible. Nice room, but declining food standards and rip off prices. By far the worst thing about the place is the arrongance served by the staff. I've experienced service that is downright... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“I didn't know the Phene before the change. I am now happy to call it my Local. You might argue, it isn't a pub that can have "local" status anymore--too posh, too cocktail oriented. Wrong. Phene welcomes a nice mix of people. The staff is friendly enough that you can go alone and not feel out of sorts and there is ample seating for going with a large group. With the renovation and cleaning of the patio, this will be the place for people to relax over the summer. Plus, I dare you not to fall for the charms of the new managers.”

“Iggy the dog, (you can't miss him), sets the tone of this place; eat, drink, play or just chill in one of the many cosy corners. The owners are welcoming to all and very accomodating-- they seem to really love what they do. I recommend the Salmon and Noodles, and the Sunday Roast is big and yummy, as well. Unlike most of N1, the Mucky Pup is a very cool place without trying.”

“I don't think it was as fab as that last user review said. It's called Garlic & Shots I know, but after eating there it's put me off eating garlic again - a little garlic is fine, but drowning in it - I don't think so.”

“One of the best bars in london! don't be scared off by the crowd - they're all sweethearts deep down inside. Music wise this is the place to be when tired of the mainstream muzac played in most bars, here you'll get proper rock - all night long! Yeah.”

“Recently went to this pub with a group of friends for dinner. Food was v.good. Atmosphere was loud, warm and cosy. The food was very good, with the menu offering the likes of seam bream, lamb shanks, ostrich, tiger prawns, pasta. We all agreed that we would definetely go back again.”

“If you don't think this pub stinks, it's probably because you do too. What could be a beautiful old Edwardian pub is just a scruffy old boozer with grumpy staff, sticky carpets and you come out smelling like an ashtray and probably with terminal cancer from the fumes. Apart from that, yeh - it's fine.”

“what a pile of poo. over rated and overly expensive. the atmosphere is somewhat lurid and you feel like if you knock something over you will be thrown out. Not welcoming at all. went for my girlfriends 30th and the service was so poor 2 people didnt get their food until we'd all finished. greenwich needs a good bar but this I dont think will fill the gap”

“This bar undoubtedly adds to the increasing buzz found on "The Cut" and its kitchen competes handsomely with some of the quality restaurants in the vicinity. In the summer, it's a must. The proliferation of colour in the garden at the rear makes the atmostphere more Chelsea Flower Show than South Bank. Staff are great. Spirits are high quality and sofas perfect for a smooch. Very impressed!”

“This seemed like a perfect venue for sunday lunch after a trip to the natural history museum. The bar is cosy, the restaurant is light and airy and the service was friendly but we were treated to hard roast potatoes and chewy beef for about £12 - disappointing for a meal that is so easy to get right. The maltesers with the bill were a nice touch though.”

“If you want to be treated like a second class citizen then you'll have a great time here. Otherwise don't even think about it! The place is packed. They estimate how long you will wait and then you need to double it and add some, all the time the drinks bill is mounting up, and they don't come cheap either. The food menu is really limited and although dencent portions consists mainly of rice. The staff are appallingly rude and when I was there the manageress was hateful to us even though we had waited 3 hours to get food. I will never go here again and I will be telling all of my friends to give it a wide birth too.”

The Anchor and Hope, Borough & Southwark (Bar)
“This is a place worth going out of your way to visit. The setting is unpreposesing and if you arrive early, as you need to, you may think you have the wrong pub. But persevere and your taste buds will thank you. I had read some really positive revues on the Anchor and Hope in Waterloo and knew that it was in the running for several soon to be announced rewards. I was not dissapointed. The crabmeat on toast starter was exquisite and the rack of lamb my companion and I had was so delicious, especially accompanied with mouth-watering kale and just right lentils. I finished with a rehubarb pudding that was heaven. The wines and fino sherry we slurped during our oh so wonderful meal were excellent value and for seventy pounds, we had no complaints at all. The friendly and efficient staff managed a full dinning room with total aplom. Take the effort to go, you will be well rewarded.”

“Quality - good honest drink and grub at the top of Richmond Hill. Thankfully not too many people know about this little gem and as such you can get a seat most days. A word of advice: arrive early if you wish to benefit from the views - the tables at the front are hot property.”
