Bar Social 245 Lavender Hill, Clapham, London, SW11 1JW (Map)

A friend and I went along to Bar Social last night to join them celebrating their first anniversary since opening. The bar has become a regular haunt for us and it was great to see it so busy. As always... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

The Bolingbroke, Clapham (Bar / Restaurant)
“For years I have bemoaned the absence of a decent gastro-pub on Northcote Road and so was excited at the prospect of The Bolingbroke. So far though, it has been a bit of a disappointment. They seem unable to serve their real ales (TT Landlord and Deuchars) in good condition, and our first meal there last night was a real let-down. The attractive menu was promising, with much made of the provenance of the ingredients, but the execution was frankly poor. Stale bread did not augur well. Scallops to start were fine though the pea puree could have been cold mushy peas and the acompanying ham was cooked to a toothbreaking cinder. Belly pork main was flaccid except for the seperate piece of crackling, one end of which was again horribly overcooked. Sea bass somehow contrived to have the appearance and texture of rollmops. The unmentioned dishes were no better than OK. The next table rejected their roast beef with trimmings. Service though was faultless and charming.”

The Rutland, Hammersmith (Bar)
“We visited the Rutland Arms by the Hammersmith Bridge this evening for Dinner. We ordered three different meals, one of which was at best acceptable, the other two disgusting. The first meal was the Roast which was OK except that it mostly consisted of potatoes. The second meal was the sausages which could not even be cut through with a knife because they were dried out and burnt. The last and third meal was the Beef and Ale Pie which had virtually no beef and only gravy with the pastry like the sausages, dried out. When we raised this with the waiter, he responded that he had asked us earlier if the meals were OK to which we agreed they were. However, that was almost as soon as we had started and we had not been in a position to know if the meals were acceptable or not. At our request, the waiter then asked the someone more senior to see us who immediately took an aggressive stance stating that we had been asked earlier and that as we had already eaten some of the food, she could not give any form of refund. Only with some argument did she agree that they would refund one meal but not any more. Even though we tried to raise this problem in a reasonable manner, we were treated very badly which left us feeling especially bad about this experience. The Rutland Arms is in a great position, the decor is lovely and the drinks were fine. However, we absolutely would NEVER go back or recommend this as a Pub to eat at.”

“Wow, dinner and a show! Sitting at the "Shochu Table" right infront of the ice block, the most unique feature in any bar in London, is by far the best seat in the house. When they do saw the ice you may want to watch out for the "impending snow". The atmosphere here is just great.”

“After reading the review about the ice block I decided to go check it out for myself. It really is abit of a show. Very different indeed, they serve the ice with a spirit called shochu, which the infuse with different flavours, the jasmin is delightful. This lounge is really trendy and fun, but very busy.”

“The ice block they have in this bar is the coolest thing since the saw they saw it with! To see the bartenders saw away at the ice with this huge traditional Japanese saw was amazing! They then chizzle the ice into manageable blocks with really good precision (I can't imagine most people doing this in the dark), and then use it for cocktails! If you want a drinking hole with a twist this is the palce for you! Awesome DJ, a show from the bartenders, the perfect Thursday night out. Great going guys!”

“I went to cheapskates last night (20th august)... I think it's great the drinks are so cheap £1 for a bottle of carlsberg and 80p for a spirits... The bouncers were really friendly and helped when my friend lost her ticket for the cloakroom... and i lost my purse and it was handed in (with everything inside!) The only bad thing is the smoking it's ridiculous when it gets busy you have a 5 minute smoking allowence and then a whistle is blown by a lady a like 2 call madame whiplash... you are also forced 2 be seated whilst smoking! Apart from that cheap and very chearful night out!”

“Well done you guys in the Cambria, at last we have something very special right on our doorstep. I have visited the Cambria twice in the last last week, once on monday to see the jazz and have dinner. The music was something else and the food just could not have been better or more interesting. See you again soon 10 out of 10.”

“I recently took my new Exec to the Gallery for a welcome lunch & found that contrary to previous review, the a la carte menu was complimented by an extensive "specials" menu with more fish choices than i dared look at for fear of never choosing. I believe the Gallery underwent some "managerial" changes recently, according to some of the new staff members (whom i found to be very pleasant, amsuing and attentive!) and while the team working seemed to get on well together, i still managed to get good service, felt relaxed, not rushed as is prone to happening when you find yourself in a city central location which is obvisouly bursting with reservations & people walking in for lunch We both enjoyed our lunch & will have made 2 reservations since, both equally enjoyable. ”

Picture of Firezza, Clapham, London

Firezza, Clapham (Restaurant)
“Firezza is my favourite pizza place in London (or dare I say, ever!) I haven't been to Italy but apparently their pizzas are about as authentic as they can be this side of channel. Baked to crisp perfection in a wood-fired oven, these traditional Neapolitan pizzas are apparently made strictly to Italian recipes using ingredients that are flown in from the daft boot-shaped country every week. As far as pizzas go, they are rather posh - toppings include goat's cheese with caramelised onions, tiger prawns, Italian truffle oil - and so, effectively, these are takeaway and delivery treats are to be savoured and enjoyed (rather than to satisfy the beer munchies). If the idea of cooking or hosting a dinner party brings you out in night sweats, cheating by ordering some Firezza will make you a lot of friends. ”

Los Locos, West End (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“My wife and I recently paid a visit to Los Locos and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The service provided was warm and friendly. We were made to feel welcome. The atmosphere was lively as it was quite busy. Usually when we eat in town at this time, we're the only people in. The portions were generous, the menu wide and varied. I can't think of anything negative to say about the place. Very good value for money. Great location, just a short walk to the theatre. We'll visit again as you can't go wrong for the price and quality of the food. I don't mind leaving a large tip for the staff as the certainly earned it. Looks like they enjoy working at Los Locos. If I was 40 years younger, I might like to work there too! Ha ha.”

Moranos, Edgware & Mill Hill (Bar / Restaurant)
“We have been going here for a few years now and to be honest I have never been to another pub where the staff have been so friendly, efficient, welcoming and accommodating. Caroline and Rosie the landlords are the most perfect hosts and food is always top notch. The bar is decorated very tastefully and would fit in perfectly in the most exclusive parts of Central London but lucky for us it is just round the corner in Canons Park. Need I say more?”

“I found this a great place to find out my sexuality. I have never felt so relaxed and comfortable around people of my own kind (gay). I would advise anyone who isn’t sure if they bat for the other team or not, to go on down there and have great time with a great bunch of guys. 10 out of 10 (due to the fact I got lucky that night). Love Bish xxx ”

Picture of RS Lounge, Woodford & Chingford, London

RS Lounge, Woodford & Chingford (Bar / Restaurant / Club)
“Old regulars of The Rising Sun, where expecting RS Lounge to reflect the old haunt, but with its clinical atmosphere, most of the old regulars are feeling frozen out. The interior is beautiful, with the multicoloured light changing ceiling, and the decked out gardens with canopies are equally as nice, however, RS Lounge has become slightly above its station - not forgetting we are in Walthamstow here! The heavy electro beats become rather monotonous after an hour, as it sounds like the same song has been playing for the entire night! The Rising Sun's music catered for everyones tastes. West End priced drinks, and a £10 entrance fee after 9pm (£5 before) is a big turn off, especially when you can head to nearby South Woodford or Chingford and get into any bar free! All in all, a nice place to go to once in a while, but not somewhere you'd want to go too often. I think the owners have spent so much money doing the place up, they're trying to claw back every penny in the drink and entrance prices. Its a shame they didn't do more market research on the area, and what the people wanted.”

“I love this pub, I've always loved this pub. It can take a while to get served though but only when it's really heaving at the seams. The staff are good and cool without being pretentious. And there may be other pubs in Clapham, but nowhere beats the Falcon garden in the summer.”

“Very disappointing evening at Beach Blanket. The food is over priced for the standard and portion. The staff are ok but not knowledgeable about products. Cocktails too sugary and diluted. Not very busy but took ages to be served. Lacking in style and substance. Give it a miss unless you are very patient and don't have high standards and like to mingle with out of towners that have taken British Rail into Liverpool Street.”
