Archangel 11-13 High Street Kensington, Kensington, London, W8 5NP (Map)

The cocktail list at Archangel looks impressive. Unfortunately, in reality, they taste very average - and at £8 a pop way overpriced. The staff were rather rude and unhelpful and overall the place felt... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“I've been to this bar plenty of times and I love it!!! The staff is really cool and friendly. If you are looking for a place to have a drink in a nice atmosphere with great cocktails, don’t look further, this is the place. The guy behind the bar, James is the best bartender and entertainer. Really can recommend it to anyone.”

The King William IV, Hampstead (Bar)
“After an absence from Hampstead for three years, I thought I would try my old local; King William IV. I was aware that the pub had been refurbished, and was somewhat pleased to see that most of the traditional features of the old bar were retained. Although some of the decor did seem rather cheap for Hampstead. I was disappointed to see that there was no real ale on tap, so we decided to choose a bottle of wine instead, only to find that they had run out of this too. After choosing a second bottle of wine we were astonished to find that this was out of stock too. So we asked what wine they did have and ordered this for £10, which was undrinkable! We did have sympathy for the bar staff, it obviously wasn't their fault. Although the woman who served us was rather rude, slamming glasses and muttering under her breath. I thought the pub may be having a bad day, and perhaps a delivery didn't turn up with it being a Sunday. Next we decided to move onto larger, all deciding to drink Kronenberg. This was served to us in warm glasses, and was flat. I pointed this out to the lady to no effect. I have been coming to this pub for over thirty years; the staff were always friendly and I knew them all on first name terms. In addition there was always ale and a selection of wine. The William was a pleasure to drink in, and had many many regulars. I saw only two on my visit. This is the worst pub in Hampstead: the staff are rude; they have no beer or wine; the music was too loud. What ”

“It was Friday night, my flat mate &, me wanted to go out somewhere we could have a good time and get a bit ‘merry’. We had both had tough weeks at work, crunch was the right word. We looked online for local places and liked the sound of Bar Social. So we made our way there all dressed up. What a great night, we got there and the place had a really friendly feel, and atmosphere. The staff were great, the owner even intoroduced himself. The cocktails were brilliant and we tried as many as we couold. The music was really eclectic and made a really good change from the usual cheesy pop or mainstream stuff you usually hear. It seems a great place and I am not at all surprised it was so busy, it is set out on three floors so very spacious. We set out to have a good time & get merry and thanks to bar social & the staff there we exceeded that, go there I definitely will be a regular.”

“All I can say is WOW, I am originally from Ealing, London England. I now live in beautiful Detin Florida. I have had so many people ask me have I ever been to The Church, of course I have back in 1980/81 I won one of the wet T.Shirt contest and went to Switzerland sking..... I am now 44 and could probably still win a wet t shirt contest. The church was The Bag back in the day and sounds like it's still going. Great experience in my younger days, everyone you just have to go. I hope to stop by again, just keep having FUNNNNNNNN. Thanks Sue ”

“Someone should open a really good gay bar in Earls Court - maybe the new Coleherne Arms (when it re-opens) could be that bar..? If not, the area is crying out for a decent gar bar and someone could make a killing (not Colin Ireland). Come on guys... Let's bring Earls Court back to Girls Court like it always was!”

“After reading all the positive reviews about this bar I decided to check it out for myself with a workmate in tow. We recieved a freindly welcome by the bar staff when we arrived and were somewhat amazed at the amount of beers and cocktails on offer, so took us a while to decide. The decor and general feel to the place was warm and inviting and the music was also just right for the time we arrived which was quite early eve. All in all we stayed a bit longer than intended cos the cocktails were very moreish and at very reasonable prices too. If u havent already been to this bar get on down u wont be disappointed.”

The Betjeman Arms, Kings Cross (Bar / Restaurant)
“This is traditional pub food (fish & chips, bubble & Squeak etc) done really very nicely. The dining room round the back is a bit more formal but really a lovely place to have lunch and the front bar is more bustling if you like it that way. Whenever i have been (i work localy) the service has always been very good, like the bar staff who carried my drinks to my table, as there were a lot of them. You could do alot worse in the area, and none better in the station.”

“This gay bar is all about the music... admittedly the sounds of the 80s and 90s, for a 40 something vaguely alternative gay crowd. Pop quiz night and the monthly Eurovision event (downstairs) are the highlights.”

The Hoist, Vauxhall & Oval (Bar)
“After 12 years this place is well past its peak and the crowd have moved on. Fridays and Sundays are empty and Saturdays are hit and miss, despite the closure of the second arch to make the place look busier. The place has been badly managed for a few years yet it's one of the priciest nights out in town (and a pint costs more here than anywhere on the gay scene). Lack of air conditioning (or rather a refusal to use it) makes this a leather bar it's too hot to wear the gear in. A sad shadow of its former self.”

“An uneasy mix of 'olde London' and hipster posing, with 'i'm doing you a favour by serving you'-style barstaff (at least on my visit). Avoid the ghastly Honey Porter...vile undrinkable stuff. ”

Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Vauxhall & Oval (Bar / Club)
“For good reason this much loved bar is at the heart of gay Vauxhall. Since being saved from the bulldozer new management have succeded in building a week-round rosta of themed nights. Saturday nights ("Duckie") see an alternative/indie soundtrack with cabaret from around the globe, while Sunday afternoons are home to the Dame Edna Experience and a sweat-drenched, pumping dance playlist. Expect queues at weekends.”

“We had a lovely evening in the very modern and sleek Bamboo Grove. The food was very good particularly the Oxtail and the 3 fish curry. The service was very prompt and it was refreshing to see the chefs at work preparing our food. For 2 courses and non-alcoholic drinks we paid about £25.00 a head. We were too stuffed to try the desserts...next time! I would go there again and recommend it to friends”
