The Famous Cock Tavern 259 Upper St Islington, Islington, London, N1 1RU (Map)

This Pub is terrible. Next to station but no other reason to go there. It would be better to wait outside in freezing hail then venture inside and be faced with the rudest staff ever to work behind a bar.... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“We previously loved going to the Salthouse for drinks... great ambience. Tonight we arrived and were greeted by a young woman (how do I put this delicately?.. with her rear cleavage in clear sight) instructing everyone who entered to remove their hats and jackets. I found this curious... it was snowing outside and she didn't even allow customers a chance to get settled. She seemed more concerned about the appearance of customers and keeping customers away from the bar than serving anyone. We had enjoyed going to the Salthouse for drinks, but with all of the other choices in Epsom, we'll pass on the Salthouse in future.”

Hop Poles, Hammersmith (Bar)
“This is largely regarded as the worst pub in Hammersmith. That's not true. I visited it and must conclude that this is possibly the worst pub in the entire of London. The bar staff are ignorant and slow, do not know about the events advertised in their own pub and the clientelle is the worst mix of aged alcoholics and youngsters for whom drinking is the reason not the adjunct to a night out. If your idea of a good night out is to be served terrible beer by surly staff while wondering if a fight is going to kick off any second then this is the place. It lacks any vestige of hospitality. Quite quite shocking.”

“Went here with an office party, there was 20 of us, we were in the harem room downstairs it was great - the food was amazing - we had loads of different mezes and a selection of grills, the meats were so tender - i think Kazan is the best turkish restaurant around.”

Banana Tree, Finchley (Restaurant)
“When our starters arrived they were cold, we had actually been sat watching them congeal on the side for 15 mins. When we complained to the manager his response at best was indifferent and at worst damn right rude. We won't be going back in a hurry, some restaurants need to understand that the cutomer isn't being unreasonable for asking for basic service.”

“I can't believe all the good reviews for Lucky Voice, we were not so 'lucky' for my birthday 'treat'. Arrived for a pre-drink at 5:30pm and was told by an irrate receptionist that the place only opened at 6pm and she promptly slammed the door in our face (by the way its below 'Yo Sushi' but they don't tell you that piece of useful info when booking or on their website). Ate in the aforementioned sushi bar so were late at 6:15 for our 6-8pm slot. Ordered drinks from our booth, some were forgotton about. Booked for 8 people but there were only 6 of us - yet the booth only sat 6 anyway. And here's the best bit: We were in the middle of the last song on the dot of 8pm when we were told to clear off or book another hour. I told them we were late getting there and could we at least finish the song but hey NO - even though nobody else was waiting. I went to pay and they tried to charge me until my friend came running up waving the receipt because she had paid on the quiet. They would have charge us twice otherwise. Weird seedy place and unhelpful staff. Who needs to pay to meet the Gestapo! No way are we going back (and one of our party is a west end musical star!). Interesting concept if the right people were running it. I can't believe Martha Lane Fox is an investor.”

Galicia, Ladbroke Grove & Kensal (Bar)
“Galicia was found by my girlfriend on one of her food-fueled google searches. Her living in NY and me in London made it a bit strange that she would find this little gem hidden at the far end of Portobello Road. I can honestly say that food wise it is one of the best and their sangria has only been beaten by a place in Seville. The fun of tapas is to share and the tapas menu is varied and caters to all. My personal favorite is the chorizo in wine, which goes quite well with manchego and some fresh bread. The second best tapa (and currently contesting the 1st place spot) are the patatas bravas, which are crisp on the outside but buttery once you bite into them. The sauce is just the right amount of spicy without burning your tounge. A note about the sangria, mix well before consuming, as the sugar gets stuck at the bottom. The first time we had sangria it tasted strange until we reached the bottom and found the sugar soaked in sangria and fruit. Since then, the sangria has always been sweet without the strong alcohol taste, but the kick is definitely there. The service is typical spanish, and coming from a small town in Galicia, it feels like home. It's not to everyone's taste, but if you have visited Spain then the authenticity will catch you by suprise. Far from a touristy tapas trap, Galicia excels at providing great food for a good price. I have introduced at least 30 people to this place and not one person had a negative view. Highly recommended.”

“Good luck, Ian. Despite a general disappointment with the decor, the staff were good, they still served beer and (most importantly) was the best place in Chelsea to have a drink in the evening during the summer. I hope your efforts to get the place reopened are successful.”

“I often pop into Cafe Koha in the evening for a glass of wine and some olives and always have a pleasant time. In March I had a private party downstairs and cannot praise the staff enough for their help in setting up the equipment (there was live music) and for ensuring that the evening ran smoothly. My guests were impressed with the surroundings and a good time was had by all. Thank you Cafe Koha.”

“A smart gastro pub, the emphasis is definitely on food, wine and quality ales. The £10 2-course lunch menu is good value for money and the food is excellent. One of the key “USPs” of the Mitre is it’s wine list, they have a large selection by the glass and some interesting choices: a chenin from India sticks in my mind. You do seem to pay for the privilege of having so much choice however, some of the wines are very expensive by the glass (although they are good quality!) and one Aussie number was much cheaper in the Prince Albert down the road.”

“I had my 30th Birthday here on Sat 1st April 2006. Reserved an area downstairs next to the DJ booth and had a fantastic night. Only complaint was they ran out of house champagne and the next two bottles up from that! But we came to a compromise in the end. By the way, if anyone was there the same night and picked up a green jacket by accident please get in touch! Thanks”

“This pub has a great location and could be really fantastic. I may have just visited on a bad day, but the service for food was incredibly slow (over 45 minutes for fish and chips and burgers) and when the food arrived it was not as advertised on the board. There was no apology from the manager - who made me feel like I was inconveniencing him by complaining - instead he just threw a refund down on the table. Unfortunately there are so many tourists around here that he can probably afford to treat customers like this as there’s no shortage of passing trade. Definite case of over promise, under deliver at the Gipsy Moth.”
