The Dove 19 Upper Mall, Riverside, Hammersmith, London, W6 9TA (Map)

It's a good oldy worldy pub but don't go there to eat. Service took over 40 mins. My partner had a steak and ale pie which had more of a shortcrust pastry than the nice light fluffy puff pastry and the... More Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“This used to be a great place but in 2005 they took a faschist view and banned children - even during the day. No comment. Needless to say we don't go there anymore. Same goes for many Islinton couples I know. Shame on you Canonbury Tavern!”

Picture of Thirst, Soho, London

Thirst, Soho (Bar)
“Al might like to think that Ron's review is inaccurate but I too have been told by the doormen 'we've let too many in tonight'. It's not a case of being busy and loud, it's being so busy that fights or at least agro starts. Whilst I've been at Thirst this has happened precisely because too many people were in the venue. It's not a particularly aggressive atmosphere but when everyone is crushed and has no choice other than being in each other's faces then these things happen. On the night I was in there, it was extremely loud. It’s no use saying go back to the suburbs (other than being rude it doesn’t address the criticisms). I like a bar where you can speak without having to shout so loud in your mate’s face that you singe their eyebrows with your breath. And the drinks are over priced. They might be cheaper than other venues but that doesn’t mean Thirst is good value. It just means other places are bigger rip offs. The only consolation is that - as someone who’s been going out in Soho for years - I know these places come and go. They’re transient because most people only go once and the custom dries up. I was in a big party the last time I was in Thirst – it was a friend’s leaving do. I also met another party – everyone was slagging the place off. If you head to the suburbs, you might find a decent bar. I’d recommend it to anyone tempted to go to Thirst.”

The Chandos, West End (Bar)
“Grrr.... to the luddite reviews. The Chandos is, quite simply, a great pub. It's cheap, in an incredible location (which makes the price all the more impressive) and the beer is nice. I guess if I try hard, I have three complaints: one is that I once had watery salsa with my nachos (which the staff replaced for me) and two is that it's a victim of its own success - it can get pretty busy in there the choice of spirits is very limited (Also, I don't understand quite how Harry can give it 1 out of 5 for value for money. It's £1.70 for a pint. In the West End. How effing cheap does it need to be? Sam Smith pubs are always excellent (check out the labyrinthine Old Cheshire Cheese down by St Pauls). When Britain goes non-smoking, my liver's gonna get even more of a hammering....”

“The pub has a policy of plastic cups for everyone who sits outside whether you want to go onto the park or not. I can't understand this as it cannot be for safety reasons as bottles are readily available. Is it just me who like my beer out of a pint glass??? The food was very ordinary as is everything about this pub.”

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead (Bar)
“The Spaniard's is probably my favourite pub in London (I grew up around the corner) and, despite the occasional change of ownership has never lost its charm nor ambience. And unlike other local pubs the traditional interior has been maintained. It's great to come here on a winter's evening, step out from the cold into what feels like a cheery, village pub. But in the summer it is even better with one of the best beer gardens I have seen and it does get absolutely rammed! And despite being only 25 yards from the road traffic is not heard. A gem.”

Fine Burger Co, Muswell Hill & Hornsey (Restaurant)
“Have just had a distinctly average meal at the "Fine" Burger Company in Muswell Hill. Problems started when ordering. Having requested a Satay burger, rare, was surprised to be asked "chicken or beef". It might be useful to employ staff that know that you don't serve chicken rare. Distinctly nonplussed when burger arrived cooked medium. Menu does not state that vegetarian burger comes with mayonnaise (this is stated explicitly on some other burgers) - not good when you are ordering it for a pregnant woman (raw egg not recommended for pregnant women). Asked for a chopped salad with Balsamic dressing rather than the standard ranch dressing. Had to ask for the salad becuase it wasn't brought out with the rest of the food and when it was put down on the table it had no dressing at all. The dressings were unceremoniously plonked on to the table 10 minutes later without a word of apology. Onion rings arrived with a puddle of oil in the bottom of the bowl - would prefer that they had been properly drained of the excess oil. Spent half the meal without a drink as staff not interested to notice that glass was empty (was not going to ask for one as by this point didn't really want to give them any more money) and at no point did any member of staff ask if everything was ok, not even when we asked for the bill. To top all of this off, service is added on to the already expensive bill automatically. Needless to say, I didn't pay for service as none was provided.”

Picture of Builder's Arms, Chelsea, London

Builder's Arms, Chelsea (Bar / Restaurant)
“This place can be fun but a word of warning for 'normal' people ; your tolerance of braying rich kids will be tested and it's run by a bunch of preening lay-abouts so service is often slow and frustrating. Anyhow - the reason for this review is to ensure that no-one ever orders the food there. I had a piece of belly pork that (when it finally arrived 1 hr after it was ordered) with hindsight I think had been only half cooked under a grill. Stupidly (drunkenly) I ate it. 4 days in bed feeling as sick as I have ever felt in my life ensued. Also, the prices of the food in my case added insult to injury. Buy the expensive drinks, perve over the lazy rich tarts and marvel at what invisible force keeps those polo-shirt collars turned up if that's your bag but NEVER, EVER eat the food. Rant over.”

“Probably one of the nicest gay bars in the West End, it gets it's fair stick for being pretentious and full of city boys, but I have always found it to be friendly and lively. The bar staff are great too and I often hang out here, there is a great crowd and if I come with a straight mate, it isn't so in your face or intimidating for them as say Comptons.”
